How do you Water the Bonchis. Soil seems to dry fast. I use akadama and soil (kukkamulta). Do you have a method of inserting the water from the hole underneath the pot?

We planned to but got tired of driving that day and stayed at Rotterdam instead.

Our route was Copenhagen-Roskilde-Bonn-Reims-Rotterdam-Helsinborg-Gothenburg. The germany-france day was touring the riversides of Rhein and Mosel and the french countryside.

I came back from my european tour-holiday. Meanwhile the big Aji Cristal started blooming and Bhut Jolokia has produced a number of flowerbuds that i´m unable to count.

Funny to see that a growth explosion happened indoors. I moved the plants in front of a window that gets sun from dawn until 13.00.

So i guess they didn't die afterall.

I have got a question for you. it will maybe make you laugh, but I am not sure about it. How can I find out, that the fruits are ready to ripe? for example serrano or lemon drop.. 

And the second question is for those, who use hydroponics and fertilizers from GH. I know that bad taste is caused by to much nitrogen. The labels on fert say, that floramato has 1% nitrogen and floramicro 5%. What concentration of each fert in solution ml/l are appropriate for both- safe for eating and quite good taste?

Fruits are ripe when the color is right. You can eat chilis green as well but if you want seeds you should wait until they are ripe.

Some people use oly water a week before harvesting to better the taste. im no expert on the concentrations but ive read that you should give more N at early phases of the plant and then later more K. I use about half of the instructions myself. I have the 3 part flora set from GH.

A setback for growing. I had to move the chilis back indoors because of the repair works on the balcony. im also leaving to tour the europe for 1,5 weeks and the watering is left to my brand new ex-girlfriend who is moving out of the apartment.. Im terrified to see what is the chili survival rate when i come back...

Nice plans you have here. I wish i had space for more chilis.

1. Bird's eye or mouse dropping  chillies (thainimi: phrik khii nuu) are the smallest and hottest. Most commonly green, but red can be used in most recipes.(tästä löysin nimityksen linnunsilmächili ja sitä olen käyttänyt, mutta olisiko sille parempaa nimitystä?)

3. Sky-pointing or long chillies (phrik chii faa) are about 5cm in length and milder than the smaller ones. Used in stir-fries, salads and curry pastes.

4. Orange chillies (phrik leuang) are hot but not as hot as bird's eye chillies.

Selitykset ovat mielestäni jokseenkin epämääräisiä, enkä oikein ole onnistunut keksimään, että mitä lajikkeita nämä vastaisivat. Joten jos joku oikein mukava ihminen, joka asiasta enemmän tietää ja jolla olisi aikaa, voisi minua hieman valistaa, niin olisin kovin kiitollinen.

Satavarma en ole itsekään, mutta tämmöistä nyt tulee mieleen:

1. Bird's eye- tyyppisiä chililajikkeita löytynee useampia. Itselle ainakin Malawi birds eye tulee mieleen. Käsittääkseni Bird's eye-nimitys viittaa itse chilipaprikan pieneen kokoon. Linnunsilmächili saattaisi olla ihan ok käännös. Tosin tuo englannin kielinen termi sanoo minulle paljon enemmän kuin linnunsilmächili, joten laittaisin sen sulkuihin käännöksen viereen tai sitten puhuisin karusti bird's eye-chileistä.

3. Joittenkin chililajikkeiden podit kasvavat ylöspäin. Esim Bolivian Rainbow tai Numex Twilight jne..

4. Toisten lajikkeiden hedelmät ovat oransseja kypsyessään. Esim Orange Habanero (erittäin tulinen). Viitataan varmaan yleisesti sen värisiin lajikkeisiin.

Kuulostaa että tossa tekstissä puhutaan yleistävästi tietyntyyppisistä chileistä. Fatalii varmaan saattaisi tietää paremmin asiasta.

Does anyone know what are those damages in my Bhut Jolokia? Hope its not a plant disease..

Some of the plants just refuse to grow. I dont know if they have partially died or if they're just stubborn.

The Red Habanero insists to be a small plant:


The Bonsai-like appearance of Short Yellow Tabasco. A Mystical event decapitated the plant and it lost one of the top branches. Also the water level meter got broken a bit due to the incident. I Suspect a chair fell on it in the wind. Luckily it didnt damage any of the good plants.

Some of the plants have encountered problems. Bhut Jolokia, my favourite son, has some pale leaves. I suspect that they have been burnt in the sun. Some of the leaves have started to dry up. Bolivian Rainbow has turned black in the sun and looks quite impressive that way.

Minä taas olen sitä mieltä että tossa ruukussa se voi kyllä kasvaa kohtalaisen kokoiseksi, mutta jossain vaiheessa tulee raja vastaan kun juuritilavuus on kovin pieni. Kasvattelin yhtä kaverille menevää yksilöä suunnilleen ton kokosessa ruukussa passiivihydromeinigillä pelkässä sorassa ja alla vesitila. Vilkaiseppa fataliin forumin puolelta mun valokuvapäiväkirjasta mitä sille kävi kun unohdin kastella .. Tosin se toipui mutta oli aika rajun näköinen

Tohon kipristelyyn pitää kyllä sanoa että oon huomannu samaa omalla habanerollani. En tiedä kyllä mikä siihen oli syynä. Tosin kyseinen habanero joutui myös liikalannoituksen kohteeksi kun passiiviravinteet bubblerissa liukenivat tarkoitettua nopeammin... Voisikohan siinä olla syy??
