Lee, how do you do that???
I also use soil and nutrients but my plants are the half so big an bushy like yours!!!
Amazing!
3
Lee, you're doing a fantastic job there!!! I fully admire your plants.

Tell me something, please: you said, somwhere in your thread (I don't find now exactly where), some plant of yours got oedema (wich looks like crystals on the back side of the leaves).
you said then "I know why - it's not overfertilizing  ;)"    can you tell me what it is???

***
I read/posted about this subject also in other threads here, but I couldn't come to an unambiguous conclusion;
is it the too low temperature at night? is it overwatering? what is it???
I experience this phenomenon on all my chinense - all of them grown in waterfarms / aerofarms. in such farms, since the plants grow all in water, one can not speak about owerwatering, can he? and why only chinense? other plants like pubescens (rocoto) or annuum never get oedema!!!

Hi there,

your plant and pods have clear characteristics of starfish, as said. my starfish pods look like this:

Even the taste you described is quite similar to the taste of my starfishes!
"very crunchy, juicy, sweetish at first, then a little sour in the end"
exactly! and a fruity aroma. the heat is about 6-7.

Your plant is perhaps a hybridation between starfish and some kind of numex suave (habaneros without heat!)

After harvesting the Fatalii plant, I cut it an let it vegetate again:

Hi all, I'm back with some details about the pot:

Costs for my Aerofarm:

Pot...................10 eur
2 Sprinklers........  3 eur
Gardena fitting...  6 eur
Elbows..............  2 eur
Pump................  8 eur
Saucer..............  3 eur
2 Screw tubes....  4 eur
2 Caps..............  1 eur
Hoses, etc. .......  2 eur

-------------------------------------------------
Total (about)...... 39 eur

And now the results: I had a Habanero which was grown in soil and didn't bring to much pods. So I've cut it and set it in the aerofarm.

Hi mattson,

I first used Gardena sprinklers (1 pair - 3,60 euros) (the link from Miksa73 ist right).

But then I've found sprinklers "Antelco-Australia" in a small growshop in Cologne. I've bought 5 pairs (15 euros).
Look here: http://www.antelco.com/uk/sprinklers/rotorspray.html
The Antelco sprinklers seem to work a bit more silent as Gardena ones, but I didn't find an internet shop until now to order them online.

You're right concerning rust-free parts. I thought these tubes are made of some aluminium alloy as I buyed them (they feel like aluminium), but it obviously isn't so  :(
Regarding the elbows: I will buy some made of stainless steel by now. They cost the double but they are worth.

That looks awesome! How much was the total cost of all parts, and how much noise does that aero farm make? If it's cheap and quiet, I might build one too.

Hi Abloy,

the costs will be about 40 euros (timer is not included).

The pump is immersed in the solution and doesn't make to much noise. A bit noisy are the sprinklers, because they sprinkle the solution against the pot, too. OK, I would say, the noise is supportable. But the watering is not continous (I think it will be enough 1 minute every hour during light period). I have a timer now which has the shortest interval 15 minutes, which ist to long, I gues. I intend to procure (or build) a timer which alows 1 minute intervals (but until now I didn't find such timer). Any ideas?

(anyway, I will continue my presentation in a few days)

Hydroponic growing / DIY Aero Farm

Hello,

this is my new system: Aero Farm using sprinklers.
All you need is a pot & saucer, the same pot & saucer you can see in my older topic DIY Water Farm (http://chilifoorumi.fi/index.php?topic=6779.0),
an aquarium water pump (5 to 8 W))
and the following pieces:

buy as replacement part (without can, etc.)we need only the capsprinkler
...
screw tube (for bulb fitting)elbow (the hole must be enlarged to 10mm)all together

And now, everything 2 times; install the sprinklers in the pot using 2 screws for each and connect them with the aquarium
water pump, usind hoses and a "T" fitting.

Hi there,

you know, I hate people who present something and forget to post the results until the end.
Such a guy am I! But now I want to set a full stop to my topic, even if nobody expects it anymore.

Unfortunately, my Brasilian Starfish hasn't grown anymore and has brougth but 2 or 3 pods. I couldn't make the plant flowering. The leaves were still green but there was total stagnation, so I've decided to put it away; as I did so (it's a long time), I noticed that the roots were quite rotten (and smelled accordingly).

I also decided to buid a new system:  an Aero Farm usind sprinklers.
So please follow up to my new topic DIY Aero Farm

Hydroponic growing / Vs: Hydro Medium questions

Lainaus käyttäjältä: calm - tammikuu 30, 2010, 09:50:59 ap
Well, that is not so straightforward. :) Cosfii for compensated switching supply is usually around 0,95 and if there is no compensation it can be something like 0,6.. And if there is plain simple linear power supply it also has relative low cos fii. Of course reason for these are not tradidional current leading/lagging voltage but spiking current taken by rectifier-capacitor system.

Hi calm,

I've looked into the mather and I think you're right.
I don't think the lamp has a compensated switching supply so cos.fi for such a LED lamp can be quite low.
I've bought an new equipment for wattage and energy: "energy monitor 3000" by Voltcraft...
...but unfortunately I send the lamp back and got money back so I can't measure the cos.fi of the UFO anymore.
Anyway, the manufacturer pretended the lamp has a wattage of 90W. The measured wattage by me was 54VA so can the the active power be 90W???

:-[  ???  - it strongly depends on what electrical consumer you have. I mean the LED lamp.

LainausOn the screen it shows VA. Is this equipment of yours also able to measure/show VAr and W? If not, readings might be quite incorrect (according to power used/billed) when measuring discharge lamps depending on cosfii on those..

Right!  :)

My equipment shows no W. But it shows kWh with the next button press.
I'm not sure if it is kVAh (aparent energy) or really kWh (active energy). If they write kWh in display, I think this ist the billed energy.

Anyway, the active-power (W) of a LED lamp equals the apparent-power (VA) since LED lamps don't consume
reactive power (so cos.fi equals 1)

you mean the water should be at say 8 cm during growth
and at about 5 cm during flowering & ripening ? (having 10 cm clay)

it's easy to measure the wattage of any electrical consumer.

All you need ist an energy&power meter.
I've bougt this one in a superstore with about 10 euro.
It shows you power consumption (wattage) and energy.
I'm really curious about other lamps, since local dealers buy in Taiwan or Hong Kong, too, I suppose.

19
...and how high should be the water during flood, since the clay layer is only 10 cm?

hi cdamarco,

I've got a UFO exactly like yours, from ebay too, with 96 EUR.
I've measured the wattage of it and it takes only 54 watt, not 90, as the seller said.
Anyway, as I payed with PayPal, I sent the UFO back today and will get my money back, since PayPal also protect buyers against fraud like this.

Did you measure the wattage of your lamp? That would interest me very much.
