Today I started my 2009 season:
My 2009 growlist:
Aji Cristal
Bih Jolokia
Fatalii Yellow
Madamme Jeanette
Omnicolor
Pimenta de Neyde
Rocopica
Tabasco Greenleaf
Wild varieties:
Chili Manaus
C. rhomboideum
C.lanceolatum
Bought some Rockwool cubes to get started

Rockwool cubes are ideal to germinate seeds. Press link and find out more!!!. Fatalii's Growing Guide (http://www.fatalii.net/growing/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=100&Itemid=107) (http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/9108/fatalii26x26ti8.png) (http://imageshack.us)
Selected 3 wild varieties.
C. rhomboideum, C lanceolatum, Chili Manaus

(http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/6795/img4880jh9.th.jpg) (http://img511.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img4880jh9.jpg)
I will germinate the other varieties end January and will pre grow them using CFL untill they are ready to go outside, which will probably be end of April
I guess I will extend my list a bit while waiting for those wild´s to germinate
Looks great!
Patrik
Not bad selection of varieties to grow, not bad at all! ;D
Thx, Nice list ha ;)
Love these RW cubes. 1 C rhomboideum is sprouting!! :)
(http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/686/img4946mg2.th.jpg) (http://img178.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img4946mg2.jpg)
Way to go! :)
Sometimes wild species can be a pain in the ass to get germinated!
Rockwool cubes really make growing chiles much more fun. :)
A second sprouted
(http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/4476/img4948uo2.th.jpg) (http://img177.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img4948uo2.jpg)
The first seed.
(http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/8237/img4949jb6.th.jpg) (http://img171.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img4949jb6.jpg)
Heey Fatalii, what will happen with the seed shell. Does it fall of. When growing in soil the seedling + seed has some friction while emerging to the surface. But in RW there is no friction. You must have seen it hundreds of times.
lee
pff. :)
(http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/4121/img4971sk6.th.jpg) (http://img176.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img4971sk6.jpg)
(http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/1872/img4995pr1.th.jpg) (http://img84.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img4995pr1.jpg)
2 x C. Lanceolatum are sprouting :) :).
(http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/1121/img4998vs7.th.jpg) (http://img297.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img4998vs7.jpg)
Transferred 1 Lanceolatum to a separate cube.
(http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/1034/img5010qf7.th.jpg) (http://img171.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img5010qf7.jpg)
Another Lance sprouted!
Lee, you saw it happen with your own eyes :D
Remember that lances will grow very slowly when seedlings.. but later... well, you'll see. :)
:D Almost.
That lance compared to the rhom grows very slowly. The lance is starting to get some grow height now. Just a few mm
The lance is starting to go up :D
(http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/3429/kopievanimg5037yd6.th.jpg) (http://img98.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kopievanimg5037yd6.jpg)
C. Rhomboideum. True Leaves
(http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/5441/img5088va7.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)
So you notest the difference with rhombe and lance growing speed already.... :)
I got a little worried about lance at first because it was so slow, but when it makes more foliage, it will become one of the fastest one! :)
Yes the Lance grows very very slowly, but heey already glad they germinated :).
Interesting to see for me how they develop in the next few weeks.
Yeah, I just tried to say don't worry about it's growth! :) there won't be that much happening in few weeks but... you will see when it's summer!! :)
C. Lanceolatum

Moved the "Naga" inside.
(http://img147.imageshack.us/img147/7980/img5267xw4.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)
Installed the grow tubes

(http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/2581/img5264nt2.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)
Nicely organised system you got there! Sometimes rigging the lights can be a pain in the ass. I've tried to make my lightsystem as simple as possible.
(http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/8190/dscn0099cy2.th.jpg) (http://img149.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscn0099cy2.jpg)
2 x 36W fluorescence tubes (warm white)
Seems to be enough 'cause my C. lanceolatum is fruiting under those tubes...
(http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/812/dscn0149fs4.th.jpg) (http://img153.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscn0149fs4.jpg)
Nice Wille!.
Love to see more pics.!!
Are you growing the Lance first time?
lee
Lee, that's my first Lance. It's about 1,5 years old now. Last yield was one berry an that's it... ;) I didn't have proper lights that time. Now there are about 10 "berries" ripening. One has just started to turn red! :) I cutted that lanceolatum down in the end of last summer. It was so bushy!

Edit: image
Ok, he's doing much better this season. Are you growing other wild varieties?.
Damn I hope to get more then just 1 pod. One of my Lances still has his seed shell on and is hardly 1 cm tall.
I hope it will survive.
lee
The first seeds are germinating. Took 3 days. 2x Aji Cito, 1x Fatalii yellow ;). All fatalii.net seeds. New record for me
(http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/1097/img5288ls3.jpg) (http://imageshack.us).
1 seed of each variety transferred to soil.

I'm growing five wild varieties including that previously shown lance. The other four are
Tepin, Cocina Da Frieda
Ulupica
CAP 1478
CGN 19198 #2
We'll see if CGN 22084 germinates...
Have you tried moisturising the seed shell to get it softer and easier to pop off?
Nice selection Wille. Ulupica, Da Frieda. Keep me posted on those ones :)

Nice looking rhoms! What is that red you use top of the pots?
I have Seramis on top of soil. It's some kind of dried clay. It absorbs water very good and decorative purposes
looks like you are doing great! I love the Seramis you have, it looks really nice!
Regards
Patrik
Hi Patrik,
That Seramis is great. Its actually designed to minimize watering your plants. What they usually do is. Fill the pot 1/3 with seramis then add plant with rootball and fill the pot up with seramis. Other advantage is that roots get a lot of oxygen.
But that Seramis is expensive. 2 Liters about €4.
I will do a trial withone of my peppers to see how well they do. Interesting stuff.
Just google Seramis.

You have THE green thumb and patience and energy to take a perfect care of your young seedlings!
My seedlings are always a mess, I start appreciating them more when they are bigger... ::)
Top quality pics too!

I've also had troubles germinating Tabasco greenleaf. I'll try again next year. How long have you been germinating Rocopica (Ulupica)? I tried to germinate Ulupica for about 4 times this year. Gladly I had Lady Luck on my side at last... ;) RW-cubes did it! It took about a month.

It took 24 days in 25 degrees.
I germinated my seeds most of the time at approx. 29 degrees, sometimes higher temps.
I kept them under CFL and took them in at night. Indoors maybe 20 degrees in GH!.
I germinated most of my seeds this way, and used a heating mat in just 1 of 2 mini GH I got.
A Lance on RW, a few of them did not get the shell off and stopped growing. Looks like the shell on pic. below starts to crack

Ain't it a tiny and wonderful seedling!
Takes a long time to grow after that point.
Later on it's quite fast to grow.
Happy with that one. But I am now the owner of 2 Lances :) :)

Beautiful plant indeed that Rhom of yours! Leaves almost look like they're made of green velvet! I'm hoping to get some more of those wild varieties this/next season. They're so special!
It's very special and unique plant! The yellow flowers are fascinating.

Produces a nice amount of pods too!

Great pics Fatalii, once again. Those pods look like some berries. Weird, hanging lingonberries or cranberries! ;) Looks very special indeed!
Those pics from fatalii are just great. But even more the plant is just awesome, lots of little pods :).
Pic made by Fatalii. Will try to keep my Rhom as compact as possible

My "rhombe" under the LED lamp is getting very compact after cutting it down few times.
It will actually look very good a little later!
I will post some pics soon under the Bonchi section.

It`s a one year old lanceolatum what i am overwintering inside. And it`s doing well.
I thing youre lance is just starting to grow (thinking :)) and when it starts, you don`t have any problem with it.
Hi Masa
Not really worried but more surprised by it's slow growing. But I do know now that its usual for the C.Lanceolatum. Will be fun to see when it's starts to grow fast :)
Nice Lance you got there!
Todays temps where about 14 Degrees C. took em out real quick for some watering

I have moved 4 plants to moms sunny south window sill to have some more space in my box.
Some of my plants like the Aji cristal and cito are very big. They are the tallest ones. Not a good move to start them that early. They really need some repotting but that will enhance growth big time!! But my box's to small :( Hope the good weather continues so I can put them outside in a 2-3 weeks :D

Thx. Reflection sheeting in general improves growth significantly. Not just that bottom layer but very important the sides reflect a lot of light. The efficiency of the reflection sheeting I use is like 95-98%
The growth of the C.Lanceolatum is improving. Still very small but I see some progress.
Just love this plant!!

Wish my season would be so far already. :)
Hi Lee,
Is that greenhouse new for this season, or have you used it previously? I used a very similar greenhouse last year, except that it had clear plastic. The plastic wasn't very durable, it ripped in the seams (especially next to the zipper). I think the reason was that I had the 'door' partly open, i.e. the zippers half way down, and the wind just tore it apart. Another problem was that there aren't any ventilation holes except for the door, so you either have to keep the door fully open (which kinda defeats the purpose of the greenhouse) or make a ventilation hole in the ceiling. Otherwise you'll get cooked chiles :-\
For this year I'm going to buy an automatic window opener to install in the ceiling. Takes a bit of work to get it installed, but I'm sure it's worth the trouble ;D

Thx for the tips man. I know its actually a crappy GH :) but it will do for a while at least for this summer. My plants getting larger by the day and in a few weeks i only have room for my wild varieties.
I bolted the tubing real tight to the paving but you right about the vent. holes. I will cut some in the roof when it's get to hot outside. Today we had 22 C . Temp in GH where 35C with 56% Humidity

How do you fertilize them, Lee?
Just very simple. I use plagron growmix http://www.hydroleaf.com/hydroponics/plagron/grow/mix/p-2053.html . 2-3 weeks after potting or repotting I give them chillifocus http://www.growthtechnology.com/nute-chillifocus.asp.
Check out this site!!! A lot of information on chilli's there, http://www.fatalii.net/growing/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=12&Itemid=26
Btw, What are you growing?
Unfortunately I can't find Chilli Focus in Poland, so I'm using some polish fertilize for peppers.
It's my first season, so I'm a bit scared and anxious.
Now I've got about 50 little plants here :) :
- 17 Cyklon
- 8 Thai Chili Red Dragon
- 8 Jalapeno Purple
- 9 Cayenne Golden
- 5 Habanero Orange
- 3 Hungarian Hot Wax
Now plants have 4-5 weeks, 1 week ago I've repoted them to 5x5x6 pots. And They're in soil.
When really warm sunne weather come in may, I'll repot to 2L( o13cm x 16cm) proper pots and put them on my balcony.
There's a plenty of room for them, but I'm thinking about building small greenhouse similar to yours......but smaller

My GH is the smallest one on earth :) ;). footprint is 1,4mx1,4m.
A tip don't underestimate how big chilli plants can grow ;). but on 2 L they won't get that big of course. Anyway good luck
btw: You can order Chillifocus, there are a lot of online sellers
2L are too small??? OK, so what do you think about??
OK, I found. You're potting to 4,5 L. Hmm quite big. What's the diameter?

4,5 Liter is quite small for chilli's ;) Most of the plants I have on 4,5 L will get a final repot to 10+ Liter
My pots are square 16x16x20cm.

Daytime temps can get pretty high in there. I measured 36 degrees C with 22-23C outside. I will cut some holes in the "roof" of the GH to get some proper ventilation.

Hmm. Maybe 11 liter is enough. I thing i but mine in 10 liter pot. Who knows, but it is nice to have berries also. Maybe is better keep it in 11 litre and try another nutritiens later. I yuse too that chilliefocus. Is there that ionic booster from same producer? What are you thinking about that?

Ahhh..I can already see what kinds of bonchis it's possible to get from those rhombes!!
If you are into it... take one cutting from a sweet spot, it will greatly affect how it will look when it's mature plant.
Also it's great help to start bending the lower branches at that point already!
If you take a cutting, you won't risk those perfect plants of yours. :)
Ok that Bonchi stuff is still tricky to me, but l just love em!
Ok what should I do with the cutting to optimize root growth etc.
Great work there. I like your organised style of growing. Quick results and a healthy looking plants.
Looks like you have a lot of shelves on the greenhouse. Have you thought of maybe removing some since the plants propably wont fit there anymore? I had too little upward space on my own shelf so i had to adjust the levels several times. Some of the plant even got burned since they grew too tall and hit the lamps.

I will remove the shelfs eventually, but the GH is for my wild species :). Other plants will be put outside on short term.

Lee, remember that many wild species enjoy it outdoors, even here in Finland! Rhombe and lance for example. I kept them outdoors until it was getting too cold and then moved them inside the greenhouse.
Chinenses and frutes like hot weather.
Keep it up!

Lee, those your final pots? how many liters?
If so, try to plant some of the plants to even larger pot, just to see how difference it does, you still have plenty of season left to do that.
Trying that with just one plant won't be too much of a risk. :)
Seems to me that the size of those pots will be the bottleneck for SOME of those great looking plants you got there!
They are on 11 liter. Wich size would you suggest and for what plants
Thanks,
I'd say atleast 20L+ for most :)

No Rhomb and Lance like the heat!. I put them outside in full sun when I'm not at work, they love it and don't wilt
But I carefully watch them! ;)
You will get plenty of good powder from that aji Cito!
20L is plenty for it! Not too much, just the ideal!

Hyper Pube needs more time to get used to the sun.. perhaps a few layers of lace cloths and then removing then one at a time.
That bolivian looks stunning, and it will look just amazing when full of different colored pods!
I have hyper pube in the mini GH that blocks the sun a bit and it seems to work well. It's perfect for hardening of. Some plants that have been in there for 3 weeks can be put outside in direct sun without any problems! So Hyper pube can be put outside in direct sun once hardened off ?
I have some lace cloths too, should I move it outside with lace cloths on it?

Those pods are colored completely black-ish. At first they had green area's on one side like you said.
The green fase was very short and those pods started to change color when the pods where small.
I guess they are ready to harvest very soon... I think

The ugly one

Did you cut the lower leaves of biggie or did the drop off by themselves?
I've cut the lower leaves
Does that help the growth somehow?
Thx guys.
Luckily ;) that we've had a good sunny start this year.

I think so.. If you cut the lower leaves/branches, witch usually receives less light the branches at roof canopy benefit more and will grow "better"

Its also good for later in the year and you have pods that need to ripen faster ;)
It's always as fascinating to wait for the flowers of the wild species! :)
Especially when you're growing them for the first time.
Must admit that I love to see the first flowers but actually the process from seed to fruit is just fascinating :). Getting that feeling lately that I'm in the wrong business :). Let's see if there are any vacancies at CGN...

hi all
had my surgery 2 weeks ago and my arm feels like sh.. Will take about 10-12 weeks to recover :(
The weather here is too cold and had to put C.lanceolatum inside. Plant was kinda late with producing fruits but it's on the right way now.
It has a reasonable amount of fruits that are maturing
(http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/4955/img9150c.jpg)
glad to hear you're on the mend :)
Cool pods on the lanceolatum. I think I had a bad batch of compost as a few of my plants, lanceolatum included, have really struggled to grow this year.
I started those seeds beginning of Januari. Plant really started to grow good around July/August.
It would be better to sow them in December..
Yeah, I planted mine in May... it was a little late ::)
I'm sure you will succeed next "grow" year. Trial and error.. best way to do it :)
cheers
I have every intention of keeping it alive over the winter & probably I'll get some fruit next year. I was just caught out by how slowly it grew (though I think that was partly the compost, which seems to have stunted a few plants)

Lance do not die!
You know what i mean?
Lance is very resistance plant indeed. Very strong color on those pods, getting the seeds out can be a bit messy... ;)
And by the way Lee, have you noticed that even those calyx teeth can get some red(ish) color!
Today harvested the last fruits on C.lanceolatum. Well there are some unripe ones but I can´t hold myself anymore, will start trimming today :D .
I must say them I´m very pleased with the yield of Lance as I started it relative late.
Well here's lance. I bit bald but he will do fine in the end :). I haven't shaped it yet because I don't know what to do with all those stems. I trimmed some smaller roots and will let it sit for a while and see how it will grow.
I don't want to mess em up by removing the wrong stems/roots.
I can always mess it up later.. :) ;)
btw, have moved them under my CFL's and hope to see some green soon..

Damn, Lee. Quite impressive list of wild chiles. Those lance roots are so cool! My lance doesn't focus growing the main stem... It's very busy gettin bushy. ;) It really has the very same growing habit as yours.
Good yield!
C.Lanceolatum has some new growth on several branches :) . I even can see some purple-ish new growth on C.rhomboideum, anyway there's something growing on that stem.
It seems like Bonchi's love CFL too, will post some pics. tomorrow.
Will be a great wild year for you!
Looks like you will have a nice batch of wild bonchis after next season!!
Gladly, they are easiest bonchis to take care of! :)
I sure hope they will do fine :)

Wthey will surely look great in the future...
I would cut a lance a bit more... but that of course depends how large you want the plant to be.
It will be easy to cut later too. :)
Will see how it grows as he is started to shoot new growth on all branches
Here's rhom. See some more new growth

Here's Lance. Will cut some stems this weekend, lance showed me witch to cut :)
Rhom is going nuts.. That piece of cutted wood is growing like mad.
Damn that start looks promising... now, I would cut the smallest roots off.
It takes a little while to do but now that it seems to survive, it's worth doing!
And that plant will deserve a GREAT looking pot, be careful not to choose too large or the plant loses the bonchi-look. :)
Another tip I could give is cutting the stems shorter as more growth emerges, just to make the new growth very dense.
It might feel a pain in the ass at first but it's worth it in the end!
If you give that plant some time, it will looka amazing a little later!!
Looking forward to see more pics.
Thx for the tips ;)
But should i take take the rootball out again and trim the smallest roots?
Here's a pic taken yesterday
(http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/6519/img9400.jpg)
Damn, just took Fatalii's advice and was looking witch stems too cut untill I notice this small flowerbud :o.
2 weeks with CFL after cutting it down completely
(http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/1293/img9407r.jpg)
Nono, just trim the visible small roots to make it look more MASSIVE. small roots usually spoil the esthetics of the bonchi plant.
Just keep trimming the long new stem growth and flowerbuds... at some point after some roots have developed, add some biobizz, I know you have some! :)
Ok, just trimmed lance a bit. Its now more shaped like a bowl.
I'm now off trimming the roots :)

Much better, don't you think...? :)
The long stems can be pruned later, but that all depends how the foliage grows.
Rhombe has very special growing habit compared to other wild chiles.
In a way it's even easier than most but so different!
It will be great later.
Sure does look a lot better. ;D
The next thing is a bit frustrating for rhombe...
As the most new stems it will grow are basically all "too long" They should be pinched back as they grow until they grow directly from the thicker stem.
When this happens all around the plant it doesn't matter if there are some longer stems around as there won't be any empty spaces around the thick stems.
It's a bit hard to explain but you will see when it grows. Basically this will slow down the progress but it's definitely worth it in the end!
Rhom is growing so fast.. 2 weeks ago it wasn't more then just a piece of wood. Seems to grow a lot foliage
(http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/5828/img9456.jpg)
Have pruned the larges stem. About 15 cm now

Hmmm.. here's what I would do with the smaller rhombe:
I'm quite sure it will not die because of that.
But of course, it will be your risk to take. :)
For the new growth that tends to be long, I would cut the.
I would let some best looking branches to grow and bend them with wires to me some nice looking branches which
would turn into wood a little later. :)
My idea was to prune the larges (as I already did) and then let the smaller ones grow the same size (what will take about a week).
Or do you suggest to cut the larges ones to the size of the smallest?
thx, btw I got some mail today ;D ;D
Ohh, that was fast. :)
Well, it all depends what kind of shape you want for your rhombe, if you want it to be bushier, just trim the the most spindly stems off.
When you trim it dramatically at this point, the growing will be much easier later when the plant tends to keep up with the bushy shape.
Yeah ;D.
Hmm, I think I keep it at that height. Those smaller stems will need about a week to get there, and even new growth keeps popping up around the entire stem ;D.
Just to get a better impression
(http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/5241/img9476.jpg)
My next bonchi project already started. Will let them grow and fuse there stems later on :) We'll see

More roots exposed so again have to do some cleaning and root trimming :)
Thats looking really cool :D
Is it possible to fuse multiple different varieties? Would you end up with multiple kinds of pods? I'm thinking of starting a fused-stem bonchi project for my desk at work.
Yeah, it's possible Checkout Fatalii's Bonchi section
Hey Fatalii,
Need some help. What to do with the longer stems?
Bought a new pot for Rhom.
Rhom and Lance have got a new hair cut. Have to trim Lance a bit more though

3 Weeks of growth
(http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/7751/img9600.jpg)
As we had the first serious frost this week (-5) I decided to take CAP1144 inside and turn it into a Bonchi. The plants was still loaded with unripe fruits and amazing to see how well it did at this time of the year.
CAP1144
(http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/8530/img9625x.jpg)
Will let it grow for a couple of weeks and will start trimming some of those roots.
Ahh looks a great start!
Hope it will survive the cut. Might be a little risky for praes.
Might be good to put a light on the bottom part of the plant to encourage some growth there befor cutting it.
That will be great with roots trimmed and with plenty of leaves.
I'm sure you can already see too how it will look later! :)
Finaly got my seeds on RW. Started late this year but I'm sure they will catch up.

Hi lee, great list of seeds.. May I ask you, how long did take the germination of CAP1144 last year? I was not sucesfull yet
Hmm dunno exactly last year, but this year I had seeds germinating after 3 weeks. How long are you germinating those?
I have some spare seeds left so If they won't work PM me and I send you some.

Great list Lee! C.parvifolium is new to me, sounds very rare!
Good luck!

The next one to germinate will probably be Duke pequin; mine germinated in 4 days. Any previous experience on CAP 1491? Seems a mystery species. And hardy too according to Fatalii´s comments. You really have an impressive list of thew wild ones.
Here´s my Haeart throb from last season. Now I´ve cut it to make it as a bonchi but forgot to take pics. Very vital.

Both seeds that sprouted weren't able to get the shell off. With a utility knife I've made a small incision in the shell and then just waited for two days. Today I managed to get it of and I'm sure it will survive now. The other one won't make it though. But I still have seeds germinating

Got 1 plant out of 10 seeds:(. I hope the new ones I have germinating will do better... ;)
From what I have heard 1 out of 10 of Tovarii is a great result, happy growing!
Sure will ;D. But will have 3 tovarii's this year ;).
Some cuttings I took from C.lanceolatum, actually brings the total on 8 C.lanceolatum plants. Maybe good for a hydro experiment..

Did you put the Lance cuttings in plain water? Didn´t need any rooting substances?

I will be traveling to the US next month for a week and have to find someone that can take care of them. I really don't like leaving them at this stage.. ;) .. We'll see.

I got mine from fatalii, but they are not availeable anymore. And they seem to be same as lee's and what I have understood they are not the actual C. Parvifolium. But they look nice anyways and are still propably rare, but not the real deal.
Aha ok. Thanks for the help.

I've put some plants outside today as the the weather forecast looks promising.. The weather last week was s.@$% .

Nice and healty plants - did you used some fertilizers?
The soil contains a small amount of nutrients, very mild. I also used some Chilli Focus but I had to stopped that because they where getting to big indoors. They are repotted now and will add some more nutes when watering them.. ;D
Some plants are still in the mini GH to get used to the sun... Can't get all of them in there so some are still indoors.
Picture was taken last weekend and they have grown well since the weather was good last week.

The indoor room is practically empty as most plants are outside. This year was kinda a disaster.. some plants got very leggy and should have been repotted much earlier. Must expand my indoor grow facilities as well :)

C.flexuosum. The plant on 1 liter that I have growing under lamp produced no pods. C.flexuosum is self-incompatible and for that reason I exchanged pollen from two C.flexuosums on 11 Liter that are outside. After 3-5 days I noticed that the pods where getting bigger and that fruit has been set. Before the pods where very small with the stigma still attached before they fell off

Have you tasted the sweet aroma of CAP1491 pods? Something special. I have 2 growing in soil in a pot and one planted in flowerbench. Last one is thriving well but the potted ones have dropped almost all of their leaves. Still bearing pods. I think in the flowerbed the moisture is more even and the exess doesn´t stay on a plate.
Not yet, mine are not matured. Are they hot?.
I had some problems with leave curling when they were small, after they have been put outside the leave curling stopped. I really like the leaves on that plant.
Btw: What kinda species you think this it is? The flower resembles C.cardenasii/C.eximium but the leaves look different.
A comparison between C.cardenasii, C.eximium and CAP 1491. C.cardenasii and C.eximium are pretty much the same. CAP 1491 was classified by some people as C.eximium, but I am not convinced..

Tried a C.flexuosum pod and they taste so good, sweet at the beginning and some nice heat to it as well. I'm glad it's the "hot" variety. I collected 12 seeds from 1 pod and they all passed the sinker/floater test. Will germinated some as soon as they dried but I'm sure they will do just fine..

Also got a chance to taste the Tepin from Eastern Travis county and all I can say is that those little things are very hot and made me feel a little uncomfortable :). At first they taste like a regular green bell pepper followed by a piercing burning sensation witch caused a waterfall in my mouth ;), luckily it ended within 10 min or so.. Was kinda happy with it

I'm aware of that but as far as I understood C.flexuosum was classfied by Hunziker as C.schottianum var. flexuosum?. Or was that before he corrected his error. So flexuosum was treated as C.schottianum var. flexuosum untill 1998 when it became C.flexuosum...
What are your thoughts?

He corrected this error in 1998.
As far as I know, both c.flexuosum and c.schottianum were very poorly known species still in the 90's, and I remember seeing the former described as as c.schottianum var. flexuosum in some sources. However, in his last major work, "The Genera of Solanaceae" (2001) Hunziker describes c.flexuosum and c.schottianum separately as independent species. It would be interesting to get genuine c.schottianum seeds somehow! :)
Well, that would be nice. Solve the puzzle ;)..
But I think, as you mentioned before they have different chromosomes so they are not the same. I should stick to C.flexuosum.

The weather is good here in the Netherlands for this time of the year but I can say that we had a lousy summer, most plants are still ripening there fruits.. But in case winter kicks I have a backup plan . Remarkable is that most species bear the cold very well. Especially C.praetermissum (different vars.) and C.flexuosum have no problems with low temperatures. C.rhomboideum doesn't like the cold at all! Like last year it dropped most of it's leaves. The C. eximium varieties I have all dropped there leaves. C. cardenasii on the other hand maintained it's bushy/shrubby foliage.. Anyway I took some pictures of my crop this weekend.

Last night we had some frost and most plants where not happy. Especially the leaves where damaged but very remarkable is that C.chacoense(CAP 501) and C.flexuosum seemed to have a good tolerance against light frost. All other plants including CAP 1478 are affected but not dead.. yet.
I collected some branches from a few plants and put them on a water filled container inside the house. At least I will harvest some fruits of those plants that are not matured

It must be remarkable, but not surprising, IMHO. ;) :)
Here http://chilifoorumi.fi/index.php?topic=3680.0 (http://chilifoorumi.fi/index.php?topic=3680.0) Aji Inferno wrote that his 2 plants of C.flexuosum
Lainaussurvived the -15C or below temperatures... For about one week. At lowest the temperature was -25C. The plants still live now, several years after the incident.
Well I knew that C.flexuosum is cold tolerant but I always have to find out myself ;).

It was about -3C for 2 nights. I know ;) not much but it was enough to practically kill all other plants. I will test the plants at lower temperatures to see what it can handle. Luckily I have 4 C.flexuosum plant so I can do some experiments. But at the moment we have daytime temps of approx. 15 C and night temps of 6-7C :-\.

Update on C.flexuosum
Well I kept both plants outside for a week while temperatures dropped to -11+degrees C. The root ball was solid frozen and I noticed that the leaves were suffering and took the plants inside. I harvested the fruits and turned the smallest plant into a Bonchi to see if it will grow again. That was 1 week ago and up to now I haven't seen any new foliage growth but I think it will survive.
I left the other plant alone and it looks like this right now.
I will cut it down very soon and will see if it will grow again but I'm sure he makes it

Immature fruits are still intact

In my opinion the results are good and C.flexuosum is by far the plant with the highest cold-resistance. Even when the temperatures dropped to -10C the plant was looking good with green leaves. But a full week with permanent frost destroyed the leaves because I think the plant wasn't able to get any moisture from the soil as it was solid frozen. Next time I will isolate the container..
An interesting frost experiment with C.flexuosum! I hope it'll survive it. ;)
Whoa Lee, I've been checking your posts at here and wildchilli and i must say YOU are THE chileman :D I was wondering do you exchange any seeds? I can't say i have something you might be interested, but atleast one of us do :)
Greetings from Finland, with lots of sun and nutrients! :P

Lee, you're doing a fantastic job there!!! I fully admire your plants.
Tell me something, please: you said, somwhere in your thread (I don't find now exactly where), some plant of yours got oedema (wich looks like crystals on the back side of the leaves).
you said then "I know why - it's not overfertilizing ;)" can you tell me what it is???
***
I read/posted about this subject also in other threads here, but I couldn't come to an unambiguous conclusion;
is it the too low temperature at night? is it overwatering? what is it???
I experience this phenomenon on all my chinense - all of them grown in waterfarms / aerofarms. in such farms, since the plants grow all in water, one can not speak about owerwatering, can he? and why only chinense? other plants like pubescens (rocoto) or annuum never get oedema!!!

Most important reason, I think is bad ventilation. Once your plants are outdoors it will disappear ;).
Transplanted some plants to their final container, 13 Liters. They will spend there first night outdoors. I made a small GH for them to stay in overnight. Protected them with some lace cloths, just in case..

The weather is great this year.. Compared to last year, when most of my plants got root bounded (not enough space indoors) and caused very slow growth for 6+weeks or so, this year I was I able to progressively transplant the plants..
Can't wait to see the the difference in growth
Got 32 out of 60 new plants outside now. They survived the first night outdoors very well. Temperature was about 5 Degrees C in the "GH" but the plants where underneath lace cloths so temperature was a bit higher

C.cardenasii CAP 1530 (grew this plant in 2010). Due to lack of space most plants last year suffered from lack of light, root-bound,etc.). The curled leaves at the bottom of the plant are also a result of not enough light or not evenly spreaded light.

Hey Rauno
Thx. Well this year I have some aphids as you can see on the last posted pics. There not a threat at the moment but I noticed there are many of them compared to recent years. I assume it's because of the early, warm and very dry spring. Anyway there keeping me busy these days

Crossed Locato X CGN19198#2 with CGN19198#2. I pollinated the flowers on both plants. It seems that the Locato X CGN19198#2 has difficulties setting fruit up to know. Will leave it for a while and will try some manual pollinating

C.tovarii 2010 Overwintered plant
Plants is doing great and is far ahead of my 2011 C.tovarii plant, lots of new growth and most important lots of flowers. This years harvest will be very early and will have more yield as the plant already is bearing lots of fruits. Last year I had to ripen the pods inside the house under growlights

The plant is self compatible and very prolific. In the nodes grow 1-3 flowers but mostly 2 flowers per node. The majority of the flowers are "shorter" and have strong culled tips. It looks like the membrane between the petals is missing!! My first thought is that the membrane between the petals gives more stiffness in the petals and prevents that it curls up like in the picture below..
Also very remarkable is that new flowers are more or less campanulate. In the picture you can see the difference

Very informative meeting we had at the Botanical Garden in Nijmegen. Unfortunately not much capsicums but lots of Solanaceae species. They recently received the Solanaceae collection that M.nee and Lynn Bohs collected in Bolivia. During the same periods they collected C.caballeroi.
Very surprising to hear that A.Hunziker accompanied by lots of other Famous researchers visited the Garden in 2000 during the Solanaceae congress in Nijmegen. He almost cried when seeing Solanaceae species growing there which he had never seen before, he only studied dried specimens..
