Bonchi / My First Bonchi
tammikuu 31, 2014, 23:05:24 ip

I have many overwinter plants about 10 have gone due to lack water, over water and other factors. One of the Rocoto De Seda plants I have been trying to grow as bonchi.

August 6, 2013

I chose this plant for Bonchi because it is not prolific, small pods and it had grown very big and tall. The container is more than 6 gallon. The other Rocoto Plants I had were very prolific and pods were also very big.

January 2014

It is about 2 weeks now, there is no sign of new shoots, is it dead? How long it would take to grow new shoots? Any tips to keep this plant alive is welcome.

Hi Toby,

All these leaves and branches are new. They are growing very fast.

As you said it should be better to remove some leaves and small branches.

Thank you for the input.

My overwinter plants got new shoots so fast. Some of them have flower buds too. I give less water, fertilizer and light.

August 25, 2013

November 09, 2013 the same plant after pruned/overwinter. All the branches are new.

Should I pruned again?

Thanks in advance.

I have sown both varieties. When it yielded pods I will upload the pictures here :)

Thanks for the post.

I am confused about these two varieties 7 Pod C. chinense yellow and 7 Pod Brain Strain Yellow. I Googled for information and found some pictures, they seems to me all are same.

What is difference between these two varieties 7 Pod and 7 Pod Brain Strain?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Tobby,

Thank you for the advice. Still I have many unripe pods so I have pruned very little. They are getting ripe may be the next month most of them will be ripe then I will prune again.

Now I reduced the amount of water and fertilizer feeding.

They were outdoors and insects have done very well pollination.

I have a very nice plant it supposed to be 7Pod Brain Strain Red but the fruits were so many different shapes and sizes. Some of them really looked like Scorpion with tails, some looked like ghost, some looked like Devil Tongue and many different pods in one plant. It produced a lot of pods and very hot.

Yesterday I sowed 6 seeds of Scorpion Moruga Blend Yellow and 6 seeds of the 7Pod Brain Strain I mentioned.

I have read somewhere capsicum pubescens are not crossed with other chinense, fruitsense, annumm but I am not sure.

I'll upload the pictures of these plants here, I am also really interested to see the pods from these plants.

Thank you for the question.

Hi Akselsson1,
Thank you for the reply. I'll sow a few seeds from my harvested pods for the experiment. I have grown many different varieties so the seeds are going to be crossed but I would like to see what it'd look like  :)

I am the only one posting questions here, because I love this site  :)

This season my plants yielded a lot of beautiful pods. Scropion Moruga Blend yellow, Fatali Yellow and Rocoto De Seda yellow are the best plants. Blue Mystery, Tepin, C.chacoense and pequin are also yield very well. I have grown them as a hobby gardener. Still now I have a lot of unripe pods, really I feel lucky to see my plants  :)

For the next season I have not sow any seeds yet. I have been doing some kinds of overwinter such as trimmed the branches without re-potting. I have read overwinter plants have not yield a lot of pods like a new plants. So it makes me worry for the next season.

My question, request for your answer is " how much it could be different yield between an overwinter plant and a new plant?"

Thanks in advance.

The plants are outside, in the wind and insects.
Thank you Toby for the questions.

Hi Toby, good advice, thank you.

I have learned my lesson from this season. I'd prepare well for the next season.

Hi Toby,
Thank you for the questions.
The plants are not crossed but the seeds from these plants could be crossed.

The answer I was looking for is:

Though peppers are self-pollinating, cross-pollination may occur. Insects, such as bees, or wind may deliver pollen from a sweet pepper to a hot pepper, and vice versa, if they are planted close together. The flavor and appearance of the pepper fruits is not immediately affected when this happens. The peppers develop normally and taste as they should, but seeds collected from these cross-pollinated vegetables may not produce plants and fruits of the same variety. You may find a sweet pepper has spicy notes or the color of the pepper is different than expected."

I have many different varieties, they are growing to a same place so the seeds from these plants could be crossed. I did not do manual cross-pollination but it could be happened naturally.

Here is the link of the above quotation. http://homeguides.sfgate.com/crosspollination-peppers-22200.html

:) I found the answer from Google  :)

Hi  :-[

First they attacked my tomatoes I killed most of them. I thought they have gone but I am wrong. They changed their menu from sweet to hot. Yesterday I found a couple of holes on the scorpion pods I did not know who made it. Today I found this culprit inside the Ghost pods.

Scorpion and Ghost are growing next to the tomatoes. Still they have tomatoes to eat  :o all may tomatoes are getting ripe so they changed their menu  >:(

I do not have question but express my frustration here  :) and any advice about caterpillar are welcome. Next season I would use BT before they attack my plants.

I have a question about crossed chili plant. I have grown many different varieties super hot chilies next to each other. Is it possible the pods of the plants (germinated from the true variety seeds) crossed? Sign of crossed  such as the shapes, the taste and the size? I have not grown them for seeds so I do not much care about the seeds from these plants. I think only the seeds from these plants could be crossed (next generation) if we used the seeds but the plant are not crossed. If you need further more information regarding to my question please do not hesitate to ask me.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Toby, thank you for the post. I hope I will get some pods. That's a good news for me if they grow in lower temperature. I have read Rocoto De Seda also like cold climate. I started worry for the winter.

Still I keep writing here  :D about my wild chilies.

In fact I did not buy wild chili seeds I got them free when I have bought super hot chili seeds. I have a few wild chili plants among them I like c.chacoense most, firstly, it is compact, may be grown very big in big container, I like these slim hard fiber like stem with a lot of branches. Secondly, the taste, it is hot and very good flavor. It could be a very nice luxury item of any room.

I have Wild Tepin it is a big plant none of the pods are ripe so I do not know the taste.

I have Pequin but I do not like the taste it has a lot of seeds too.

I have Aji Chuncho, I like the taste.

I have Blue Mystery it is very prolific big plant, none of the pods are ripe so I do not know the taste yet. I like this variety too.

Blue Mystery

Now I am very interested to grow wild chili, probably I would try some in the next season.
