Was shopping at Walmart and found this over in the floral bouquets next to the produce department:

Hey, said it was a chili, and it has the most awesome little pumpkin shaped fruit, so I bought one and started harvesting seeds to grow my own.  Something wasn't right though.  Once cut open, the fruit smelled like bananas and had no heat at all.  This was no pepper!  Did some digging, turns out its called a "Pumpkin on a Stick" and is actually a type of ornamental eggplant!

Still, the stems it was on were very pepper like, and the research I've done so far has said that it does indeed get woody stems...

Considering which forum I put this in, you can probably guess what I'm going to try doing to it after growing it up nice and big next year, right? ;)

Question is, what do you call an eggplant bonsai?  A bonegg?

That's one ugly motherfu..  ;D

Don't be too hasty with this one. I rememberd a chile myth from the web pages of the Finnish Chile Assosiation - Roughly translated:
Q: The ornamental chile plants can't be eaten?
A: All known chileplants are eatable. However Chile relatives Solanaceaes, that are commonly sold as ornamental plants are poisonous.

Well hopefully someone can confirm this one?

Edit: Yeah. Bonegg sounds great.

Aku

Your plant would be Solanum integrifolium.

^ That website says that Solanum integrifolium is used in Asian stir fry recipes or they can be used in dried flower arrangements.

I'm thinking of cutting it back low as I can and training the branches out very low to the soil line to turn it into a bonsai pumpkin patch as opposed to a full tree.

Edymnion

Ha, just had an awesome idea for this pumpkin patch bonegg.

Since I'd have to cut the main trunk down pretty darn low, I can turn it into a stump and put a small Linus toy on top of it.  Make a Great Pumpkin scene out of it.  I found a few finnish clips of the Peanuts cartoon on youtube, so I'll assume you guys have it over there?

I'll be damned...

Last week when it dropped down into the upper 30's (2-4 °C) I decided it was time to just go ahead and cut back my last tomato (an OSU/P20 Blue) and toss it on the compost heap instead of letting it sit there and freeze to death.  I grew it from a cutting, so it had a very curved main trunk (it was almost an S shape) and while I was looking at it I went "Tomatoes are in the same general family as peppers, I wonder if you can bonsai one?".

I proceeded to chop it down and trim it to fit in one of my spare bonsai pots and figured "Hey, I was going to toss it on the compost pile anyway.  It'll probably die, but I'll give it a shot.  Worst case scenario I just finish the job and toss the stem out in a few weeks anyway."

Again, I'll be damned, but I'm seeing new growth on this thing.  Apparently the answer is yes, you can make a bonsai out of a tomato plant!  A bonmato?  Bonmater?

The beginnings of my bonmato.

Edymnion

Oh well, the bonmato is dead.  When the cut finally stopped bleeding, the one sprig of life dried up as well.

Was rather surprised it lived as long as it did, and I have cuttings from it (that was my OSU/P20 Blue tomato), so no real concerns.

What a weird incident...sorry to hear you lost your boner. I mean bonegg.
