I tried to post a few pix in one thread, but got error message stating that upload bin was full or something like that.

Light is on 18 hrs.  Nutes are mixed at the lowest mixture (for seedlings) on GH labels.  I don't have a ppm meter... just looking at them on ebay a few minutes ago... will order one soon.

  I did lower the light a few inches, the day before, trying to get it as close as the plants would like it.  Small fan pointed at light nearby too, but maybe just a bit too close for comfort, so I raised it a few inches back again.

I think they're looking healthy overall... and they are growing... maybe I just need to be more patient.
They've only been in the E/F tub less than 2 weeks.

(tried posting pix, but not accepted... don't know why... they were under max size limit.)

 I set it to once every 6 hrs this morning, then checked on them just before the next cycle(5.5 hrs). 

Pushed my finger down into the clay rocks to see if there was still moisture there... which there is, about a couple inches down.  Plants look alright, but did notice a slight curl upwards on one of the bigger leaves.  Think I will raise the light a couple inches and reset to every 4 hrs as you recommend.  Thanks

Just built a basic ebb & flood table from a black plastic tub, and some plastic fittings.

I have 2 Nagas growing in it now, in hydroton clay rocks.  Started them in small pieces of a rockwool cube (small cube cut in half then quartered), and dropped them into the E/F system when they showed a little roots from the bottom of cubes( about 1 inch tall seedlings).

They look healthy so far with PH @ 6.0, using GH nutes @ lowest mixture(as per label)... BUT, they seem to be growing very slowwww.  Healthy colour, and tight nodes, but miniature looking.  Am I flooding too often and maybe stunting their growth?  I'm flooding every 2 hrs under 250w MH currently. 

I'll post a photo if that would help.  ...thanks in advance for advice!

Looks to me like too much sun/heat.  Maybe a little thirsty as well.

...instead of bonchi-ing them now, I can speed up the whole process by cutting them back, and just re-growing them from the stumps.  

btw...I already cut them back.. similar to some of your pix...around 10 inches tall each now, and I can see tiny green leaves coming out of the nodes where branches were (good sign).  

I may have to lift them out of their 5 gallon buckets though, and trim the roots now, because the roots are filling the buckets completely. No need for all those roots now that the plants are small again and just starting round two!

Yes, the stems should thicken up quickly once the foliage starts up again!  Plants get big, fast in this system.

If I can grow these girls huge again, I should have some nice thick Bonchi tree trunks to start off with!!  :wink:

 oh ya, one more thing Fatalii... any more tips on planting or growing moss is appreciated.  I brought some home from the lake a few weeks ago and planted around my yard.  I soaked these spots for a week or so, and they seem to be liking their new home. I also collected some of that white, petrified looking(dead) moss, that you have a peice of, in one of your bonchi pix... specifically for that,, to decorate my first bonchi with... it looks great!

I agree... just awesome!   I have 3 large Starfish plants in hydro buckets that i've been growing for months now.  They are petty much finished giving up the goods.

I picked a couple of large ziplock freezer bags full of pods from them, and there's only a few pods left on top now(soon to be picked).

I'd really like to bonsai them!  I just need to find some nice pots, then I will cut them back.  I'll probably leave them in the hydro system until they start putting out new growth leaves(after the cut back).. maybe a month or more. Then trim back the roots last, and put into bonsai pots.

Do you think the stems will grow thicker, after they are cut back and put into bonsai pots?

They are not bad now, but the thicker the stem, the better they look...especially for bonsai!

 Thanks for introducing this great extension to an already great hobby!

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I would add my technique for future reference.

 :arrow:  I've had good success planting seeds in soil, then washing off soil when seedling is about 2 or 3 inches tall...then planting in clayrocks in 6 inch netpots.  I fill nutrient buckets to about an inch below the pots for starters... this seems to make the roots grow faster, as they have to reach down to dip into the nutrient solution.

Then when roots reach through netpots and into the solution, next nute change I raise level to just touching bottom of netpots, so those roots are now submerged in the bubbling nutrients... then its blast off time!

Just trying rockwool starters first time now(trying to get totally away from soil), so this will be new experience for me too, but I hope this helps someone anyway.

:?  :x   ...now this just tears it!  I used the pyrethrium spray after chopping all the tops off of my last plant about 3 weeks ago. It worked! ... no aphids , not one, in last few weeks!  Now just waiting for the 10 or so fataliis to ripen so I can terminate and start over. New veg growth started soon after topping and , low and behold,  its putting out many new flowers!..yaaaa    ...so I figure i'll keep her alive for the second round of flowers,  BUT.. today on close inspection\pruning, I see the aphids are back!  :evil:  Only in one area of the plant but still, I don't get it  :roll:  ..did they materialize out of thin air?  I didn't even look at another plant in last few weeks... there's no way they could have jumped\flew\ or walked over from another plant.

Do I have to spray my plant with that poison every week or so to keep these evil insects away?

Does anyone else have problems like this growing in the house?  If this is the norm, i'll be packin' it in!  :cry:

Hey Sauli,  ... Ya, I know about the mosquitos and spraying all too well. They usually tell you on the news(radio and TV) days before spraying so you can close your windows at night when they do the spraying.  There are trucks that go down streets and backlanes to spray in middle of the night when sketters get bad. It works great... no bugs around for weeks after.  There has been a big controversy over the spraying in Winnipeg, as some don't want it.. but now that 'west nile virus' is here(spread by late summer mosquitos), I haven't heard many complaints about the malathion spraying.

I will try that pyrethrium spray first.  I called a local retail greenhouse and they recommended it.

The neem\chile spray is working but I still find 4 or 5 aphids a day on the plant.

Malathion? ... isn't that poisonous to us humans?  :?  I will use anything as long as it won't kill the plant or me. There are a half dozen small pods on the plant now... would the malathion make my pods toxic?

The neem\garlic\chile\dishsoap mixture seems to really piss them off, but there's always a few that hide in a few flowers or in tiny, curled under new growth leaves... they are crafty buggers. Not sure if it kills em, but I definitely find less(2 or 3) 8 hrs or so after a good spray\soak.  I almost admire their survival instincts, but dang, I want them gone once and for all!

I wouldn't mind a few ladybugs around, if they stayed downstairs with the plant, but there's no doors from my basement to keep them down there and they do fly around.

I'm gonna add a few drops of Dave's insanity sauce to my spray mix... see how they like that!

I tried neem oil spray, that didn't seem to phase them... then neem oil with garlic and chile soaked in the oil for 24 hrs.... this seemed to work at first, but it just doesn't eradicate the buggers completely, and every few days they seem to be re-populating.

 I think the spray is a bit harsh on my plant too, as I have to soak it down with spray on tops and bottoms of leaves and all every day or two, and the blossoming\fruiting has slowed alot last week or so since spraying with the neem.  Does anyone know of a good aphid killer that will do away with these little monsters once and for all, but will not kill my plant?

This grow has been one disappointment after the next from the get go... any help would be appreciated as i'm on the verge of throwing in the towel and starting over.  :cry:

 ... I've seen it mentioned a few times that GH Flora Mato and FloraMicro are a good combination for a hydro mix.

Can someone give me the exact ratios for veg, flower and fruiting stages that you've had success with?  How many mls per gallon of each?

   sad day... I made a decision to sacrifice 2 of my 3 plants as the aphids were out of control. The Jolokias went, I kept the Fatalii... thats the one I am really looking forward to harvest anyways. I'll try the Jolokia again next outdoor season. They were pretty unruly as plants go for indoors. Fatalii is much nicer indoor plant. The one I kept is BIG anyways so I should have a few pods yet. If I weren't growing in a stationary hydro system I may have done things differently today... I just couldn't get at the back of the jolokias as they grew into the corner of the room, and thats where the bugs were proliferating and making their stronghold on my grow. I could see them, but could not reach them by hand, and couldn't get under the majority of leaves with the neem spray.
I moved the remaining plant away from the wall, thinned leaves alot and soaked her down with neem oil spray(all around and underneath) after removing all the aphids I could see.
The lesson was not allowing enough room to service my plants all around, as I never imagined they would grow into giants.

As for the flowers, they are dropping, but not as much... I have 4 small pods on the fatalii and looks to be more forming now. Willard3, thanks for the easy view list... now that I see all points together, I think I have all covered... but, i'm thinking about that too much water point because although they are/were growing in hydro-buckets submerged in solution, ...I noticed the airstones in the culled plants' buckets were barely putting out any air now, and I imagine the fatalii's stone is the same. But I cannot access it at this stage because the plant is too big to lift and the bucket will be full of roots like the others. I suppose I could change that airstone, but it'll be a 2 person job, and still tricky.

All in all, i'm happy with my decision to sacrifice those 2 plants for the one fatalii. She can now stretch her legs, but i'll keep er' in check  :wink:

 So how long does it usually take to eliminate those aphids with neem oil spray?  I bought the concentrate, and mixed it about 10ml/liter.(2mls over directions)

 Only a couple of days since I changed nutrients and raising pH to around 6.8 ... and I already have 2 peppers growing on the Fatalii plant... woohoo!

I have been misting with epsom foliar mix as well, so maybe that helped some.. not sure.  
I used almost no flora micro(nitrogen) this time, so I  think that will help things along. I did take notice, when a few of you here mentioned about the high N, that when the lamps went off for the nite, that the leaves looked very dark green(lotsa Nitrogen) under the room's incandescent light.

 On close inspection, I also noticed certain leaves had alot of aphids.  I got under the plants with a flashlight and cut off all the affected plant parts that I could see... then sprayed with neem oil mix.
They needed a good under pruning anyways.

 So far things look promising >> where there's 2 pods, i think there will be more. I shake plants daily, and notice less and less blossom drop each day. Wish me luck... thanks again for all your help guys!

Hey Sauli   .... I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Thats right in the center of Canada, and our temps are extreme.  Winter temps(Jan.-Feb.) reach -40C and summer temps are often mid 30's C. (June-July).

[Hard to believe that in parts of BC they can grow nearly year round]

 April here is a bit early to plant outdoors(occasional frost)... generally safe to plant a garden around mid May.... and harvest would normally be around now(mid Sept.) Late August is cooling down and Sept. is unpredictable... today it's 7C.. cold and rainy, but next week may be mid 20's. These last few days have been unusually cold though.

I didn't plant an outdoor garden this year because of time restraints(work) and back problems early in season, but a friend has a big crop of peppers every year here...just have to start your chiles indoors(for outdoor garden) about March or April. I'm considering putting up a small greenhouse for next year as I would like to try outdoor hydro,..and the relentless garden weeds are getting to be a pain.

Hi Cornell   ... sorry I only speak english, but this is the best chile growing forum I could find on the net.... and I appreciate all the info I can get from other experienced growers.  

This is first time growing these varieties(jolokia, fatalii), so its a learning process for me.  I had a potted Chiltepin that grew for 3 years, indoors and out with no fuss or bother. That monster produced hundreds of pods!  Hydro is obviously a bit trickier, but the growth rate is phenomenal!

Do you use FloraMato dry or liquid form?  I think we only have the dry version in N america. Thanks for that... Don't think I'd want to mix the dry with the Micro liquid, but maybe I can order the liquid version online.  

 I'll trim some of the under leaf as well... thanks for all!

Yes, I changed the nutes today and cut back the nitrogen by about half of what I used last change. This one works out to be 5-20-17.  GH flora series nutrients >>> this change; 4ml/gal(Micro), 16ml/gal(Bloom).

 I also re-calibrated my pH meter... it was reading about 0.9 above the actual pH before calibration, so I guess all this time i've been keeping it in reality, closer to 5 than what I thought was 6.0
I adjusted this mix to around 6.7(after calibration). I will keep it there then for a while and see if things improve.

I don't have an ECC meter... maybe a worthwhile investment for the next grow.  Our local water is not very hard here, and pH is 7.0 straight from the tap.
