Is that a valid species?
Lainaus käyttäjältä: "Nike"Is that a valid species?
I'd say not. ;) Unless it's one of the newly found Brazilean varieties - but that's highly unlikely... Possibly another Tepin variety with another different name?
Mahtaisi olla samaa sukua kuin C. vehkemus, C. pallimus ja C. kassimus.
Jos on oikea lajike, niin jo on ihme homma...niin, no onhan niitä kauniita nimiä paikoilla Lapissakin.. ;)

Sarkka,it`s an english thread :)
So you mean it`s in the same category as for example,C. Scrotum or C.Fallopaeteus?
C. testiculatum is really Solanum aethiopicum, which
translates to the Solanum from Ethiopia. P. Bosland received the "C.
testiculatum" seed from the Netherlands in 1986, and probably sent a
sample to Hudson seeds.

Description doesn't sound like "Scarlet Eggplant". Where did you find out that it was supposed to be S. aethiopicum?
It's hard to believe that anyone would consider Solanum aethiopicum as Capsicum. Take a look at the picture, it looks as much Solanum as only Solanum can...
Mr. Hudson is selling Solanum gilo as well, which I assume is Solanum aethiopicum or something very much like that.
A friend of mine asked Paul Bosland about C. testiculatum and that was his reply. I agree that the descriptions don't seem to match. The flowers are white but certainly don't look like capsicum flowers

I have seed on order --will be interesting to see what I get.
No tehy don`t look like a Capsicum flower. Please report what comes of them.
Doesn't look like a Capsicum at all.
Does this look familliar? http://juuri.org/fatalii/?u=g&c=search&word=solanum&id=1754
I received the seeds yesterday so in time we will see. I am interested in the solanaceae also so this is all very interesting.

I wrote to Hudson and he says it is a valid species and he did not get the seeds from Bosland. It's getting really interesting now.

There are lot of different names for single species. I believe that C. testiculatum is just another synonym for some known species. Possibly for C. annuum var. aviculare/glabriusculum, as Thietavu assumed.

Did he say where he got them?
Here is his response
Capsicum testiculatum is a valid species - see the MoBot WWW3Tropicos database
(in our links page). The seed is from a usually reliable collector, and we
are growing out a couple ourselves. I may have a photo around here (from the
collector) and will put it on the website if I come across it. Very busy
right now with the new supplement orders. Thanks for being interested in
correct ID - mis-identified seeds are the bane of a seed bank, so I share
your concern. Thanks!

Well that really sounds like an honest and reliable answer... hmm... I have the feeling that if don`t order them I`ll regret it later :?

I agree John. The plant has little resemblence to a capsicum. I think the leaves look more like an eggplant plant. That is my observation from the 4 plants I am growing.
Chris
A typical Solanum flower. It would be nice to see more photos, leaves look quite big, it could really be some Arfican eggplant type, (S. aethiopicum/gilo/macrocarpum...) But seems to be very fast.
Maybe you should give seedsman some feedback.
Hope you'll have good moussaka... :)
Don't think is actually an eggplant--based on Hudson's pic and description of of fruit but some kind of solanum--simialr to a couple including red ruffled eggplant except flowers are quite small.
http://www.pbase.com/chiles400/solanaceae
Hey, Gekko
Here is a picture of one of the plants. Note the small size of the flowers.
Thanks John,
It still looks wild or semi-wild African eggplant (small flowers -> small berries?)
S. macrocarpum that I'm growing looks quite similar, but it's not flowering yet so I can't be so sure.

Thanks for the link. this one looks pretty close
http://www.bgard.science.ru.nl/images/47394362.jpg
It is now producing fruit--very un-pepper like fruit
(http://www.pbase.com/chiles400/image/63719776.jpg)
I see now where the name comes from ;)

Ripe fruit. Very unpepper-like. One of the solanaceae.
What's the taste like?
I don't think anyone is willing to taste it to find out. I believe John said various berries from the Nightshade species are poisonous. Not worth the risk IMO. :P
Chris
Chris is correct. Not willing to do a big taste with something I'm not sure of. I did touch my tongue to it and detected no heat or strong flavors--maybe a hint of citrus.
Yes.. a very strange pod indeed. Looks like a crossing of a chilli and a citrus fruit.
Is there a possibility of anyone knowing if it is poisonous or not?
'Cause if it isn't, it's sure worth tasting ! :)
I'm pretty sure that it is some of these called "African eggplants". These berries shouldn't contain solanine or chaconine or any other glycoalkaloid when ripe. Please note: shouldn't ;). And after all, ripe berries are not green, which is some kind of indicator of glycoalkaloids in the Solanum genus.
But, your own risk...
it compliments post very interesting
I agree with Gekko, looks like an eggplant to me too. I grew something quite similar looking last summer, it was called 'Brazilian Oval Orange'. Only my fruits were a bit bigger, longer shaped, but had the same color and appearance otherwise. I also have seeds of 'Red Egg', I haven't grown it, but I imagine it might look just like that.
'Brazilian Oval Orange'
http://www.kolumbus.fi/jartsap/Brasilian_Oval_Orange3.jpg
(Don't know what that additional part in the fruit is...)
There's also a species called Solanum aethiopicum (I think I have seeds for that one too), it's another reddish and round, small eggplant. African species.
http://images.google.fi/images?hl=fi&q=Solanum+aethiopicum&btnG=Etsi+kuvia&gbv=2
Edit: Sorry, I thought these last few posts were new, but actually this was a year-old conversation with only one new post.
Edit2: Sorry again, John has told already on the first page, that the species is really S. aethiopicum.
Apology not necessary. Interesting that you came to the same conclusion. It does seems clear that this is not a capsicum. For me it is still an interesting plant for my solanaceae collection.
I found a photo of small S. aethiopicum seedling from my own collection, so it looks like I have grown it.
I had a little trouble in remembering what ever happened to the plant, but I found also a picture taken outdoors, with a very stunted little plant and a few green, immature fruits. So I guess I didn't have room in my greenhouse, and this African plant didn't exactly enjoy Finnish weather... No photo of flower or ripe fruit was to be found.
