Hi All,
As you all know growing plants indoors require 6000-6500K colorspectrum. Can you grow plants with 4000K??. I got that info from fatalii's website. But the lamp he uses has a low lumen-rate (a sort off efficiency for light). Do you think you can compensate the K factor by a higher lumen output. Or better can you grow plants with a high lumen output but very low K-factor??
regards,
The K-factor if often misunderstood or confused with Ra-factors, etc. HPS (High-pressure Sodium, SPNA in Finnish) has a light temperature of around 2000K and is considered to be on the warm side. The light spectrum is highly ephasized around the red spectrum, so it is a good light for flowering plants. The colder (blue neighborhood, 5500..6500K) range is most commonly achieved with an MH (Metal Halide) lighting system, which is better for plants that are in the vegetative (green) state of growth.
To answer shortly: yes, you can grow plants with a 4000K spectrum.

Hi Saule,
Thx for your quick reply. Good to hear that, I am planning to grow with 220 W that provides 20000 lumen with fluor lights. Offcourse not larger then 1 m2. Just for hobby and my own consumption. An article on Fatalii's web site said its not worth harvesting with fluor lights. What your opinion???

It all depends. You can get some kind of crops (sometimes even decent crops) with fluorescent lights, but it is advisable to use HPS and/or MH lighting for the best electrical efficiency (lm/W) and results. There are some alternatives to fluorescents as well, such as Purples, etc., that seem to work well, also.

Aah i see that HPS have good Lm/w rates too. Interesting. Do you know perhaps where i can find some good grow schedules. When do i start to use flower light instead of growlight. My guess is that when the plant is big enough i replace the grow lights by flowerlights. Or am i wrong?

I grow chiles year-round with Metal Halide (MH) lamp for green/blue and High Pressure Sodium (HPS) for red/yellow.
I run both all the time whether plants are flowering or not.
Hi,
Is it anyway possible to manipulate grow/flowering (by adding more/less colorspectrum K) of the chilliplant, or do you just let it grow/flower.

I don't know if it's possible to effect flowering by changing light spectrum.
I run MH and HPS all the time and get plenty of chiles.
Do you think i have to run both type lamps?
The type lamps i use is 4000K and does not have that much red light wich is important for flowering. But it has a smaller amount of it. These 4000K are more for growing because they have a lot white/blue light. Ones the plant is big enough i stop the growing a bit by adding more red and less white/blue. This way the plant will have more energie to flower and still will grow. The 2100 K has more red light and less white/blue.
Whats your opinion. I think it will work. We will see.

Hi All,
Growing my seedlings, well guess there actually no seedlings anymore but still, is very interesting when growing them indoors. There doing great!!. I placed them under my CFL in the second week after they germinated. Wich was on August 10th.
I have made a simple timeframe picture of the growth. The text is in dutch but i guess the pictures and the numerics will clear it all out.

Hi,
My mini indoor growlist
3x bhut jolokia
2x dorset naga
2x red savina habanero
1-2x Dutch habanero F3 ( Many thx to Jukka :D )
Will see what they do in my selfmade/designed ''growfacility''. >>> http://img181.imageshack.us/my.php?image=duofluorkastrv4.jpg
The inside will be covered with reflectionfilm to increase the efficiency. I will have a total lumen output of 20000lm. Max. container size 3-4 liters Hope it will work!

Nice stems on those seedlings! so strong, in so early phase. And so many leaves too!
You can set the plant to flowering phase with nutrients, i have been using Bio bizz's topmax, and it really works!
Fatalii's site has nice pictures:

The CFL i am using works great probably! Good to hear that.
And thanks for your tip. I Will definitely buy Bio-bizz, if i am not mistaken its a dutch company that makes it . So easy to get :-)
Many thanks again for your TIP.

You're welcome :)
Yes, I am growing indoors, and I use fluorescent tubes (3*36W) and 125W CFL.
-and part of my chiles gets sunlight from south window.
I'm not getting much crop though, because the lighting is not enough.
Maybe someday I'll buy 400W HPS to get some more crop out of bushes :)
See the difference!!

I have to repot my plants. I will also add a second CFL fixture. I will have a final total lumen output of aprox. 20000 lumen. I will also add a bulb that only gives warmth and no light because we have low nighttime temperatures.
I will shoot some pics tomorrow.
I will have them repotted in a couple of days.

Producing flowerbuds on a Red Savina under CFL is no problem. Now next stage flowering. I have to add a second light fixture because the plants need more space . Untill now I growed them with 10000 lumen and 4000K.. In a couple of days I have 20000 Lumen ( in the same amount of space), And surely think the plants will get a big boost. I think I will switch to 2100K lights (red) in a couple of weeks.

Next time it might be wise to repot even earlier. It must have been difficult to release roots from that mess. Did you repot is as a whole or did you try to spread the root ball without breaking any roots?
It was pretty easy to remove the rootball from the container. I did not try to spread the rootball because i did not want te damage the roots.
Is there any (dis)advantage?

If you manage to spread the roots, the plant will continue growing faster. But I agree that in that kind of situation it might be difficult to do that without damaging the roots.
My repotted plants continue to grow fast. They realy like it in there new container.

The yellow stains on some of the leaves seem to be caused by using warm(25 degrees C) tap water. I gave it to them about two weeks ago. (Why?, never mind just dumb). Warm tapwater can contain a lot of various metals due to disolving of the inner side of the water line, wich is mainly copper (lead in old houses) around here , and of course chlorine. Now I am using cold tapwater that i heat up under the lights. I hope that most bad stuf, wich is no good for my plant will evaporate . Untill now stains are not spreading anymore and new foliage is green.

Cool stuff Lee!
I like that cabinet you've made there but it makes me realise I've got way too little light (only a 36W fluorescent).
Beautiful plants too! Really nice to see them evolve. Good thing you've kept posting even though not too many people have been replying, heh.
@Mads thx, would love to see some more people replying who have simular experiences.
My Red Savina is flowering again and many flowers are showing themselves. There are so many buds that i cant even count them. I hand polinated the opened flowers to be sure that i got it all right. Daytime temps are 26-27C, nighttime temps are 18-19C. Well keep my fingers crossed

This morning I was hand polinating some flowers on my Red Savina. I picked up some pollen that fell on a leaf

Red Christmas after all! Merry X-mas!

Thx, I will eat that red one at the bottom on x-mas eve

Hi Lee,
good looking chilies, must admit!
Btw what kind of dosage do you use with the Chilli Focus solution?
Regards,
Taemen
Hi,
I followed the dosage on the botle. I am giving them 10ml/L for flowering stage. 5ml/l for growing
My naga seems to be some kind of other plant ???. Looks more like a Habanero Red

I noticed that unusal shape of the pod earlier on. It really doesn,t look like naga at all. I would say it's the "first pod syndroma", you know, different shape, no heat, etc. But it seems like all the other pods are forming like the first ripe one too. It really looks more like some red habanero type chile... ??? Where did you receive your seeds?
I received those from a another forum
Could it be that there has been a little mess up? Mixed seeds or something. Did you grow another plant from those same seeds?
Maybe. I germinated 3 seeds and kept 1 plant eventually, but the plants looked similar
Some pics. That "Naga" on the right will go inside when the peppers are ripe and ready to harvest. I will use that space for my 2009 plants.
Will start end of this month and hope to put them outside somewhere end of April, depends on weather.

The fruits on the left resemble Red Dominica Habanero a little, but then again, there are too many chinenses that look like that.
The most important thing is that it tastes good!! :)
That plant on the left is supposed to be a Red Savina Habanero? The plant on the right is unidentified. Could it be that it is a Martinique??

That's just a little prank by forum's unique word translator. A piece of work by our evil but respectable Adminstrator, Aji Inferno... :D
Yeah, don't worry about it... I had some problems posting some links that included that word before until I realized what's the problem :D.
I use alternative words as I'm not the greatest fan of apples must-have products. ;)
Lee, you seem to master germinating difficult ones. I had good luck with some very difficult tepins this year... some of them actually germinated very fast!
Rockwool cubes \:D/
RW-cubes are great! Altough I haven't succeed germinating CGN 22084 (c. chacoense). I've tried it for two seasons now. Have to keep on trying... ;)
Heey,
I am germinating all my seeds on RW this year. My only black spot is how to fertilize them right. RW cubes contain no nutrients, PH or what so ever.
I read somewhere that you have to soak them in a acid solution like water with squeezed lemon before you put in the seeds.
But anyway I will learn it the hard way, in practice :D
Never done soaking like that before sowing the seeds... works fine with watering with hot water first. :)
Very often it seems that peope think the most difficult methods are the hardest, but after germinating several thousands of seeds I can honestly say rockwools work best! :)
I followed your instructions and they work great to my opinion. Germinating seeds on RW cubes is one of my basic instincts now :D.
Usually it's good to be NOT THAT exact with growing, but when it cames to germinating temps... I've learned to be very exact. Especially with many different varieties germinating at once.
I have a heat mat under germinating tray which doesn't reach all the way to the sides of the germinating tray.
The temperature on the sides is around 24-26C on average.
The temperatures above the heating mat is slightly below 30C.
Every year I see how big difference it does make! The cubes on the sides germinate very slowly if at all!
The ones in the middle are always full of green!
Keeping water in the germinating tray helps but at some point it always dries to a point where only cubes are wet.
Still, overall, rockwool cubes maintain the temperature very steady!
Hmm, My last batch of seeds germinated under lights with day time temps. around 30 degrees. At night a took them in and temps where around 20 degrees. 5 varieties germinated within 4 days :) :)
But as you mentioned before it all relates to that "fast/slow germinating rates and low/high temps" thing.

You right about that, completely hooked :). I bought a small GH for the wilds this year just 1,4x1,4x2m, but I need to move to another house with a huge yard and lots of space in the basement or something to grow all year long :).

I've to wait couple month before i get own chilis.
Planted seeds Juli 2008, I grew it indoors using CFL's. Already harvested a lot of peppers, its now maturing its pods in my living room :).
That pot is looking very small for chinense. How can you do it? I thing that pot is full of roots.

Its a 7,5 l container. I dont have any special secrets lol ;).

Red Savina Habanero. Harvested 25 peppers and have cut it down a bit.
Washed out the roots and put it on a 4 gallon container. I hope this will make a great Bonchi at the end of this season
(http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/9486/img6727n.jpg)
IT SURELY WILL!
If you want to minimize the stree till end of the season, keep pinching off the small roots every once in a while, so you don't have to do that once!
And just dig it up a lot, you know, raise it above the soil so many roots will be "too high", and then cut the bad ones off... hard to explain without pics, I need to update bonchi article more even though I'm sure you got it!
Thx for the tips. I think I have to cut the roots like you did in the article with that big scissor. I haven't cut the roots at all. I washed out the root ball to remove as much soil as possible and that planted it back in a large container with fresh soil. I hoped that it will grow a thicker stem that way but I'm not sure it will.
Would you suggest to cut down the roots like shown on pic
(http://www.fatalii.net/pics/rootball.jpg)
A Bonchi update would be great!! ;)
Hi lee,
you're doing a good job!
Can you tell me where you've bought your reflectors for the PL Tubes? What power do they have?
I've found a few internet shops selling PL tubes with 4000K but none with 2100K (the lowest light temperature was 3000K).

Alexander

Oh, yes, I had a look an map24 an there are 105km from where I live in Köln to Uterweg 123 in Heerlen.
I always drive by Heerlen on the way to Brussels or Maastricht but I've never visit the town yet.
Anyway, the shop send the ordered goods by TNT (not DHL) and TNT wants 22 euro, ( :o ) even if it's a small parcel, so I think I'll visit the shop my self; I will not give them 22 euro for transportation on 100 km!
Right, the laps are fantastic, judging by the results you show on your pictures!!!
And no, I haven't been by capsaholics, I'm only registered by www.hot-pain.de (http://www.hot-pain.de). Until now I've never thought about growing using lamps but since I've seen the bochis of Fatalii I want them too. :)

There's something mystical about Bonchis... it's not just how they look, but the chile plants will have so much more value as bonchis...
Wild chiles as bonchis, just priceless!
Usually I don't care if some chile plant dies for any reason, but a death of a Bonchi almost yells for setting up funerals... (I'm not 100% serious, or am I?)..
Any "common" chile plant as a Bonchi has a great value... especially when you have grown it from a seed...
Still need to learn how to make bonsai pots, that would be great!
Not at all J.. I cry like a baby when I damage the plants by mistake. Serious! ;)

I'm sad too, when every plant dies , because I only have 20 of them. I grow them on my desk!
---------------------
Lee, I plan to drive tomorrow to Heerlen and buy the lamp. I'll call tomorrow the shop to see if they are not closed.
I'd like to buy Bio-Bizz too, but they haven't this trade mark. Is there any other shop in Heerlen where I can buy the stuff? I need the three types: grow, bloom and TopMax.
Where have you got them?

Alexander
You better drive to M'tricht to Leafmann trading
They are open on saturday! But check for opening hours

Thanks, man, I drink my coffee and start to M'tricht!
Have fun!. The weather is good very sunny and 20-22 degrees C.
hey, I'm a happy man...
I've found a shop and ordered bio-bizz, so I mustn't drive to M'tricht.
I bought the lamp from Heerlen today. Friendly guy there. Then had a walk through the market and finally drove home.
Now, the show can begin!!! :) :) :)

Uterweg 121 is a greenhouse and plants/flower shop which mislead me. The growshop at no. 123 is a normal house, the entrance to the shop is on the left side of this house.
It's the only place where I could find the duo lamp!
ahh, trinacria is the name of the shop. A little bald guy is working there. Nice guy!.

Yeah, the little bald guy offered me coffee, really very cooperative. I tried to speak English but he understood German and I understand dutch too so it was a perfect communication.

That plant actually gave me a bad harvest :-[ but it seems it's doing much better now
The funny thing with Dorset,Morich and bhutts always do better there second year,Lets hope you have a bumper crop ;)

Hi!
Lee, It's been great following your progress, those lights seem to work fine. I'm Really interested in your indoor setup, what's the dimensions of that "box", did you build it yourself? What did you line the sides with? Some Mylar film? How does ventilation work? What does the outside look like? What kind of schedule are you runnning your lights on?
Would be really great if you could provide this info, I'm experimenting with an indoor hydroponic setup myself and have some concerns.. :D

Hi Bjorn,
The dimension of my box are approx. 1200x700x1000 mm. Big enough for only 2 plants, relative small varieties. Off course I build it myself and used reflection sheeting for the side, something like Mylar. I have a small fan inside for ventilation that sucks fresh air in.
I kept my lights on for 15hr/day.

I'm currently doing a indoor hydro grow in a 100x60x200cm space, 250W MH lamp. Still experimenting with waterlevels, nutrients, light schedule etc.
Have your read this?:

Ever tried 24h lights?
hehe, off course read that before.
But 24/7 isn't necessary, just cost a lot of money. Plants need some rest and you will be surprised how much they grow overnight.

That "naga" is doing great. It's producing pods like it never did before and so many buds/flowers. A lot flowers turned into tiny pods ;) . But there's a load of buds waiting to open. The next season theory definitely isn't a myth :) ;).
I guess the plants is 30 -40 cm high and it sure will look nice when loaded with pods.
