Otsikko: Black Chilli Plant
Kirjoitti: JungleRain - helmikuu 19, 2009, 04:51:07 AP
Hi all and thanks for the welcome

This is my first time being on a list like this so forgive me if I make a few mistakes at first...ie, where I should post my messages etc...
The Black plant I have had now for 2 years, Its been growing in a 300mm pot in an organic potting mix. I got it from my mother in law when she started a small vege patch at my place when she came to stay for a few months from Thailand, she got it form a friend when she ask some Thai people here in Australia if they had some seeds or plants she could have to start her garden and now I have it, I don't know if she got it as a plant or seed.
The chilli fruit grows about 5cm x 1.5cm tapering to a point, upright standing in groups of 3 to 5, they start out black changing to a deep red on maturing, I would rate them a 7/10 in heat and they are very sweet with a apricot after taste.
It is a very fast growing bushy plant about 50cm in height, new shoots start out dark green with purple veins rapidly darkening to  black, still the underside stays dark green. The size of the mature leaves are approx 8.5cm x 3.5cm
The flower has 6 petals, is a deep purple with a slight bit of white in the centre, I've just cut about 40 good size chillis from this plant and it is flowering again now with a few chillis just appearing, I'll take some photos tomorrow and post them, (how do I posts pics to the list?). This is the first time I have taken seeds from this plant so if anyone wants to do a swap.
Now perhaps I can pick a few brains, Does anyone have any info, web sites or ideas on making a Green House or perhaps where I may purchase a second hand or maybe a new one from here in Australia, the size I will be looking for is approx 12ft x 24ft or there abouts.

regards Grant

Might be Black Coban (C.annuum). Are you absolutely sure that pods are 5 cm long?

There are quite a few ornamental annuums that look like that, and many of them look very similar if not identical.

One of the forming pods seems to be green at first, different compared to black coban, but then again, it's very hard, if not impossible to recognise it.

Very beautiful tho!

OK. Then it's not a Black Coban and since Fatalii also doubt it's definitely not. I was just relying too much to that picture.

Hi
Could it be:
Aussie Black (capsicum annuum)
The Aussie Black is a rare Australian hybrid ornamental. The erect fruit starts out black and occassionally green eventually turning red. In warmer climates it can be treated as a perennial. Grown in a sunny position with well drained soil it makes an extremely attractive plant. Heat rating 5 out of 10.

Grant! is this familiar looking?

The blackness of the leaves can also depend on light. How much light, what kind of light etc. For example Bolivan Rainbow or Pimenta Da Neyde. Less light -> green leaves, more light -> dark purple/black leaves.

Hi Willie, yes the leaves do start out green, but very quickly turn black, but the undersides are dark green?

It really could be the Aussie Black. Light conditions also have an effect on growth habit. Lots of light makes chile plants bushy. Here's a picture and a description of Aussie Black I found from www.garsong.com.

"The 'Aussie Black' goes from
green to red to black. They have a
moderate heat, rated at 7/10, are a
colourful bush and  could well be
grown as an ornamental shrub.

Yes it really could be.
That better pic tells much more.

But it may take few month. :)

Hello All,
could anyone who is growing this black pepper plant that I sent seed to,
please post pics on the progess that you are having growing this pepper plant,
so that I and others can compare, thanks...

Hi Talas,
I'm pretty sure its not an Aussie Black either. The Aussie Black's pods start black then green through to red and only 1 pod per node, this plant has around 5 or more pods per node and change from black to red !!! would you like me to send you some seeds?

Mika, do have any more pics of yours?
