Otsikko: Show your bonchis!
Kirjoitti: Kakq - lokakuu 20, 2009, 23:11:30 ip
Since here are quite few photos of people's bonchi projects and I am pretty sure that it is not because no one has bonchis but because they just don't want to create a new topic for them. This section was clearly lacking a general topic where everyone could exhibit their bonchi projects easily without making the bonchi section look messy. So here's a topic for Your bonchi related pictures!

I start with my first bonchi experiment with Bubba (c. baccatum). I complain the quality of some photos.

(http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/4135/21521897.th.jpg) (http://img29.imageshack.us/i/21521897.jpg/)
This is what it looked like before cutting it down ja after harvesting. It grew in a ebb & flood system during the summer and made a decent crop.

(http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/8696/89915383.th.jpg) (http://img340.imageshack.us/i/89915383.jpg/)
Here's it after cutting.

(http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/8774/24599413.th.jpg) (http://img340.imageshack.us/i/24599413.jpg/)
Roots cleaned and cut. Maybe I could have cut them even more.

(http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/9530/70851163.th.jpg) (http://img24.imageshack.us/i/70851163.jpg/)
And here it is on the windowsill potted, cut and tops bent.

(http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/7931/52827410.th.jpg) (http://img24.imageshack.us/i/52827410.jpg/)
And a small detail in the end  :) .

I think that maybe I left the stem too tall and perhaps I should cut more those tops but first I see how it starts growing in its new narrowed shape. Any tips are welcome!

Now it's someone else's turn to show their bonchi projects!   ;)

Very nice start!

You are right, at least I would cut it down a lot more (less stem).

As the foliage grows, it will gain as much height you want it to... then again, wide looks better.

Be prepared to cut the baccatum bonchi a lot. :)

Gladly, there is not rush to do the cutting, you can always take your time and see how it grows at first.
But I'd cut id down immediately... :)

Stem of C.lanceolatum, it seems that the base is created by fused branches.   I will definitely turn this one into a bonchi ones the fruits are matured

The root base looks very promising too, just imagine when you dig it up...

Very nice if it's your first bonchi! :)

It will lookj even greater if you keep picking off the largest leaves and the new growth will be more dense and smaller leaves.
Not a far away to go!!

And when it starts producing pods, it will be perfect, congrats!

Nice pictures you all have! Here's a little update to my bonchi project.

(http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/1276/bubba611.th.jpg) (http://img137.imageshack.us/i/bubba611.jpg/)
Seems that Bubba has survived transplanting and it has started to grow new branches so I dared to cut it little more.

(http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/3528/47363552.th.jpg) (http://img137.imageshack.us/i/47363552.jpg/)
And here's my new project, Pimenta da Neyde that grew in some kind of drip feed system during the summer. I cut it down few weeks ago and left it in the system so that it could form new foliage faster. That is what it looked like few weeks ago just before cutting it down.

(http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/9712/28547189.th.jpg) (http://img81.imageshack.us/i/28547189.jpg/)
And this is the situation few weeks after. Roots are also trimmed at this point. Not so healthy looking roots tho, don't know why.

(http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/467/neydepurkis.th.jpg) (http://img156.imageshack.us/i/neydepurkis.jpg/)
And finally the same plant in a new pot on a windowsill. It could look nicer if there was enough light to turn leaves dark. But still, in my opinion, it looks pretty promising. 8)

kakq, promising start indeed.

This is actually an great example about the root trimming.

I can see thicker roots there... I would have trimmed plenty of small roots to expose the thicker ones.

Usually this means you will end up getting the actual plant higher, which is a good reason to cut a lot from the height, but this is fairly easy to do later too!

Just an example, still great work.

My first bonchis didn't look even close to that good.

The most beautiful ones now were very ugly after cutting them, it just takes some time, gladly, not too much!!

I bought a small CFL-light today for my bonchi. Light is a bit too much on the red side for growing but I think it will work
It's only consumes 20W. The output is equal to 100W
Colorspectrum=2700K
Lumen=1050
I paid €2.79 for it.

My first attempt to try a bonchi.First the original two orange habaneros (both have been out in the garden all summer, just took them in because the frost.(http://rulla.kuvaboxi.fi/mediaobjects/orig/pub/2009/10/05/8143010478555496403orig.jpg)

And the one of the two. I haven´t dared to prepare the roots more visible, just trying to see if I can keep them live.

Is it possible to trim chilis after the growth has begun, I mean the roots and so on? I bought a sack of bonsaisoil (38€) to put the plants in a smaller pots but still keep the moisture in. Here´s a few of my overwintering chilis;
(http://rulla.kuvaboxi.fi/mediaobjects/orig/pub/2009/12/07/8143010478556902067orig.jpg)(http://rulla.kuvaboxi.fi/mediaobjects/orig/pub/2009/12/07/8143010478556902069orig.jpg)(http://rulla.kuvaboxi.fi/mediaobjects/orig/pub/2009/12/07/8143010478556902073orig.jpg)(http://rulla.kuvaboxi.fi/mediaobjects/orig/pub/2009/12/07/8143010478556902072orig.jpg)(http://rulla.kuvaboxi.fi/mediaobjects/orig/pub/2009/12/07/8143010478556902071orig.jpg)(http://rulla.kuvaboxi.fi/mediaobjects/orig/pub/2009/12/07/8143010478556902075orig.jpg)

These are not bonchis but overwintering plants but I´d like to make bonchis out of them. Is it too late?
One of my favourites died; (http://rulla.kuvaboxi.fi/mediaobjects/orig/pub/2009/11/29/8143010478556719534orig.jpg)

Of course it's possible and even recommended to keep pruning both growth and roots after the bonchi has survived.

Your bonchi starts look promising, I would cut them down much shorter, they might actually have even better change to survive as they don't have to waste too much energy on long thick stem.
Of course, it is a good idea to keep pruning it down, even the thick stems as the new growth emerges from the lower parts of the plants.

The orange habanero bonchi pic is a bit old. I just discovered flower buds in them. I wouldn´t like to prune the buds or what?
Even though they still keep on coming aftrer shortening the stem.

Kirjoitti: Fatalii - joulukuu 07, 2009, 02:31:57 ap
Wwll, if you're trying to get dense foliage on the plants, you should prune big leaves, longer stems, flowers, buds and even pods... :)

So, ill post some pics later this afternoon, but one of my two bonchis survived :)
The Chupetinha died, but the NuMex Twilight one survived, grows lots of leaves, AND it already starts to flower  ;D
Ill post a pic, i didnt care about the roots first, so i guess what you tried to say before is you can "dig out" the roots afterwards, after the bonchi survived ?
Otsikko: Vs: Show your bonchis!
Kirjoitti: Fatalii - joulukuu 10, 2009, 12:30:52 ip
Yeah, you can do that later, a little by little if you like, to minimize the risk of it dying. :)

So here is my bonchi-trial project :)
It grows lots of leaves.
The Root is not as nice as it had to survive a hard thunderstorm in july with big hail.
But I love it, it grows.
Next steps are getting the roots out of the foil and  wireing the leaves...

Great start!

You might want to raise the whole plant with adding more soil / akadama etc below the plant before digging the roots and trimming the smallest roots.

It's a happy to see your bonchi growing new foliage isn't it. :)

Bonchi will usually become your favorite plant after it survives the first shock! :)
Otsikko: Vs: Show your bonchis!
Kirjoitti: bluesman - joulukuu 11, 2009, 22:49:07 ip
When you are using akadama, do you use it just as it is in the sack,  or do you mix it with turf etc?
Do the water preserving properties change if you put something else in it?
Otsikko: Vs: Show your bonchis!
Kirjoitti: Fatalii - joulukuu 12, 2009, 01:25:47 ap
I plant it below the soil, but you can mix it with soil or something like that, it works every way.

You can also use cat sand (clay pieces) for the same purpose, definitely cheaper.

Below couple of pictures from my first try at bonchi's. Unfortunately this plant took a hit when I was away from the office and it dried up. All the leaves dropped and any new growth was deleted as well. After it looks like it has mold on top of the soil :( I also have at home a lemon drop bonchiwannabe that I have cut down and it is growing nicely.

Here is my Habanero sudden death 13.11.09;

Now it´s flowering. Should I stll prune it? Seems like a long stick but branches and leaves are evenly on the stem.

(http://rulla.kuvaboxi.fi/mediaobjects/orig/pub/2009/12/22/8143010478557242104orig.jpg)   (http://rulla.kuvaboxi.fi/mediaobjects/pub/2009/12/22/8143010478557242096web_0.jpg) The pic on the right is probably the other plant (I have two)

Strafishes (only 4 left) are drying one by one. Trying to cut the stem and branches to avoid drying.

Haven´t had the guts to reveal the roots when the poor plants are in this condition.
Then Aji cristal. The pot is horrible. I will change it when it is time to prune and reveal and cut the roots. It was planted today to akadama/peat soil from raw peat. What is akadama´s pH? Any idea? I know chilis like it around 6.

Bluesman, the bases of the bonchis look very promising, some of them look a little tall to me, so if you dare (why not...?) you could cut them down a little more and keep pinchin them off until the growth will be dense enough and the shape won't be too tall to start with. They will look great.

Also, after few more weeks, you could cut off the smallest roots, that will make a great difference on their appearance!

Hello!

This is my first message in to these forums and I would be glad for any responses about the looks of my bonchis. Some tips to get them better looking and "finished" are very welcome!

Last autumn I cut half a year old Bolivian rainbow and one and a half year old Habanero in to bonchi stems. Here are the pics from soon after the cutting:

Bolivian rainbow: https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/40755_455283418006_612318006_5207715_6355426_n.jpg

I have the gravel on the surface cause there began to grow some mold. And I also had some vegetable mites (spider mites?) so I had to give them quite harsh 1 and a half week raiding session but now I seem to have got rid of them. everytime I water them I give them some bonsai fertilizer.

They have a great look, I really likem them!

There is no correct or wrong way to make bonchis.
I personally tend to make bonchi's even more bushy if possible by simply cutting it down and giving 'em plenty of light until they start to adapt their new form. With some species or varieties this might be more difficult but can be done.

I would cut down them once again and I'd also keep cutting them until they get more bushier, but it's all up to you. :)

Here's the latest bonchi project of mine, a Medusa plant turned into bonchi without growing it large at first:

Just cut this one back yesterday.  I call it "The Hand", since if you look at it just right, it looks like a hand grasping its way up out of the earth.

(http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb416/Edymnion/Bonchi2.jpg) (http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb416/Edymnion/Bonchi1.jpg) (http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb416/Edymnion/Bonchi3.jpg) (http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb416/Edymnion/IMG_1232.jpg)

I'd say its not too bad for a first attempt.  A late start first attempt at that.

The pepper is, I think, a Naga Morich.  The "soil" is an akadama substitute, namely Moltan Oil Absorber brand montmorillonite clay.  Pot I got for $10 at walmart, which had some kind of ivy and grass thing going on it at the time.

^I agree. It has a unique look to it, very handy...  I like the name too, I can't help but imagine that in a zombiechile flick (yeah been watching the Walking Dead again...) raising through the soil.

What you could do is reveal the lower part of that bonchi even more boldly. I bet that cluster is gonna look revolutionary! Atleast from here it seems like those roots are pretty thick and heavy. Nonetheless, a very beautiful bonchi, keep updating.  :)

Right now I'm wondering how I should attempt to shape the foliage.  On one hand, a traditional shape would look nice and would be the easiest to make and maintain.  Exactly what shape that would be, I don't know though.  Maybe a cloud shape or something conical.  On the other hand, I've got a trunk that looks like a hand, I could also try to sculpt the leaves into a recognizable shape or object to make it look like something is being held up.  These nagas are extremely hot, I could potentially go for something as elaborate as a skull (start off by making a sphere, extend some branches down into a jaw, then carve out eye sockets in the foliage), I just don't know.  But as you can see, it will be a while before I have enough green to work with to attempt at wiring up anything.

How do you do it? The bonchi looks exactly like a tree. And it has big juicy chilli fruits. So awesome! And the skull makes it just perfect. It suits very well. Must try it. When looking at these photos they make me feel like to grow a bonchi myself. I got to figure out how to transform an ordinary chilli into a bonchi. It needs just cutting, right? Accurate and planned cutting...

Kirjoitti: Edymnion - kesäkuu 20, 2012, 17:04:27 ip
I cheated a bit on this one.  I didn't grow it from seed, I was getting something else at my local hardware store/nursery and saw they had an entire flat of these ornamental peppers almost this size.  So, I figured they'd make for quick and easy bonchi and went through them all looking for one that already had a good central trunk.  The fact that this one was so tall was a complete happy accident, as most of it was actually underground until I hosed it off.

You see that knot about half way down the trunk, where it turns from green to white?  All of the white part there down to the roots was underground, it ended up being nearly twice as tall as I thought it would be.  Total happy accident.

Beyond that, it was just a matter of pruning.  Look at what you've got to work with, pick out the branches you want to keep, and cut everything else back.  Don't worry, they're peppers, you can't hurt them by chopping on them.  Then once you get the basic shape with your branches, let it fill back out and then cut it back again.  Then just take off individual leaves that stick out too much and voila, bonchi.

Another good tip, let it grow up big in a pot or the dirt so that it has lots of roots, then chop it's head off.  No, seriously.  If I were to hack every leaf on this one off right now and just leave 3 stubs where the branches used to be, in a week or two it would start filling back in twice as thick again.  Long as the roots are good, you can hack a pepper almost to the ground and it will just come right back twice as bushy as before.

The plan is to make it produce leaves and branches to the left, on the pot which is btw hand made!
Variety is C.ann Tepin, From peru. Seeds i bought from Fatalii.
A nice plant, very tough an resistable.
the root visible is its only one at this moment, hope it does more on the right corner of the pot if I keep it under the soil.
