Pet peeves

I need to say this. I have a few pet peeves re chiles (or any other veggies for that matter).

1. Not identifying a variety as hybrid before saving and sharing seeds. To be fair, this problem often stems from the seed companies. So really my peeve is with them. Is or is not Medusa a hybrid? What about Kung Pao? Are there more than one variety with the same commercial name?
Now I see Joe's Long Cayenne, an Italian-Canadian heirloom co-opted by the USA  :wink: , listed in the UK as an F1. To make matters worse, this so-called F1 is one of three chiles being grown in the BBC's Gardeners World 2006 Chilli Trial.  :x

2. Omitting genebank accession numbers if there is a common or varietal name associated. I have a serious problem with this. And it's why I really like what Thietavu does on Inferno. The more I visit, the more impressed I am.

3. Seed companies/others changing or editing names. And free-form spelling.

4. Seed companies/others stealing photographs and documentation. This is fairly new to peppers, but a longstanding problem in the tomato world. Usually it's small companies 'borrowing' from foreign sites. Do people not realize that we, diehard chileheads, surf the world looking for the elusive holy grail of peppers? Plus, it's ILLEGAL to steal. Funny that.

Okay, that's plenty. Anybody else want to share (vent)?

I would agree with all of the above. Unfortunately it's not just seed companies changing or making up names, it's also individuals. If along with retaining the name that comes with the seed, we also keep records of the source it would be much easier to sort out " is this pepper the same as that pepper".

Yes indeed....Chocolate Congo Brown Black Habanero...pick a few terms and rearrange as you like!

One problem is those peppers that people get without a real name/or just do not know. When they want to share the good they need to call it something and usually make it up as they go along.

In a lot of such cases perhaps Unnamed chinense (or whatever) from x y or z would probably be a more reasonable way of going about it with unidentified vars...not to mention the use of NOT x y or z for those plants that turn out not to be what you thought they were, as John has suggested elsewhere.

I used to call the Landais/Aquitaine, Aussou as that is the name of the hamlet where I got the original seed from. The fact is however that the variety is called Landais in the Landes and Aquitaine elsewhere in Aquitaine (Landes being in Aquitaine), so I trade seeds under the name Landais/Aquitaine, cos both names are the traditional names for the same variety depending on where you are in the region. The names are also used interchangeably outside of Aquitaine....no wonder the french say that they have a word for everything...they usually have two or three...but I digress.

Another part of the problem is that a lot of amateur growers are just that and have no real interest in classification and cataloguing. They can not reasonably be expected to take much trouble with researching such info...which I personally do not hold against them...this chile growing mania is just fun for the majority.

I must say that I was very pleased to get a link to this site the other day..thanks Jennifer. The wealth of information and quality of images is just great...my hat is off to all concerned. I look forward to regularly checking in to see what is happening here. Now I just need to learn Finnish!!!! Ouch!

Well, learning Finnish might prove to be an interesting experience... Still, as Nuthead wrote, everyone here in Finland learns English already as a child - some better, some worse. The reason is simple: we're so isolated when it comes to language, that in order to survive, we just have to be able to communicate in other languages!  Most kids here learn, besides English, at least Swedish, many also German, French, Spanish, Russian... These days also Japanese, Chinese - and so on.

Perhaps my and some other people's English isn't perfect - actually, you can bet on that. Still, it's this site's, Inferno's second "official language" besides Finnish, and that counts. So, let the good chili talks roll! :-)
