Otsikko: Pavlak's first steps 2009
Kirjoitti: Pavlak - huhtikuu 09, 2009, 12:30:43 ip
Hi!
It's my first year, and I'm trying to do my best.
Now I've got about 50 little plants here

- 17 Cyklon
- 8 Thai Chili Red Fire
- 8 Jalapeno Purple
- 9  Cayenne Golden
- 5 Habanero Orange
- 3 Hungarian Hot Wax

Now plants have 4-5 weeks, 1 week ago I've repoted them to 5x5x6 pots. And They're in soil.
When really warm sunne weather come in may, I'll repot to 2L( o13cm x 16cm) proper pots and put them on my balcony. I'm considering building a small greenhouse.

Now I've got some problems, I fertilized them 2 days ago, and I don't know when do the next. On the box it's said to fertilize once in 2 weeks, and every week when plants flowering.....but isn't it to seldom? Habaneros and Hot Wax are growing very slow according to the rest ???
And how about watering? Till now I watered them about 3 times a week, and every morning I've sprinkled leafs. Is that ok? First 1-1,5cm of soil is dry, but I've checked deeper and there's some moisture, but not too much.

A few photos of my VERY amateur tiny garden:

Looks good!

Nice colourful pots!

About fertilizing, a good rule of thumb is to fertilize less than the fertilizers instructions tell you because chiles are quite sensitive to fertilizing.
Since most of your plants are C. annuums except for Orange habs, you can fertilize them less cautiously, just be a little more subtle with orange habs.

About the watering. Keep in mind that the most common error for beginner is to water too much, so try to water even more rarely, or a little less per each time.. how much you should exactly water your plants its impossible to say because conditions differ. Usually overwatering causes yellow / pale leaves and very slow growth rate.

Just let the plants teach you... if they grow nicely, then everythings okay! Oh and, let us know how it goes!

and what do you think about their growth level for 4-5 week plants?
I know Cyklon is very tolerant, maybe that's polish var. :) but I'm astonished with Purple Jalapenos, their quite big too.
Pity that Habaneros and Hungarians are small, it's strange couse they're germinated 6 days eariler.......but weren't seasoned.

Cyklon is nice polish variete, check it out:

People said ( haha, like Jeremy Clarkson in Top Gear) that's easy to grow in our climate, it's very tolerant.

Yesterday something bad started to happen with few plants. Look here.
At first a few cotyledons started getting more and more dry. I thought it's okay, they have to fall down.
Then I watered plants 2 days ago, it was very sunny and warm weather, but yesterday and today is quite cold (10-14 C) and cloudy.
Then I saw this:

http://picasaweb.google.pl/lh/photo/9lSQebo-npIOOpLXj1DkzA?authkey=Gv1sRgCO-ErruB18GxCw&feat=directlink (http://picasaweb.google.pl/lh/photo/9lSQebo-npIOOpLXj1DkzA?authkey=Gv1sRgCO-ErruB18GxCw&feat=directlink)

I'm almost sure it's just lack of Calcium so I sprinkled leafs directly with water/calcium solution.
But Fatalii, You wrote "Usually overwatering causes yellow / pale leaves and very slow growth rate", and this spots just like this.
What do You think??

I know one thing: I need a lot of SUN here.
Otsikko: Vs: Pavlak's first steps
Kirjoitti: Pavlak - huhtikuu 13, 2009, 23:27:00 ip
I cut down a few leafs with those dry spots. Maybe it was lack of Ca or just sunburnt, but I didn't want to risk if it's spider mite.
I haven't found any of those mites, but it looked similar to attacked plant leafs photos.

Kirjoitti: Fatalii - huhtikuu 14, 2009, 00:15:55 ap
Hmm... it might be overwatering, but your soil doesn't look too soaked? Is it possible that it's overfertilizing? can sometimes cause results like that... "rotting the leaves".

I will answer your question about Biobizz here:
You can use amounts said on the Biobizz bottles, even when you mix them together, for tiny plants, use a bit smaller amounts.

When placing the plants outside, protect them with lace cloth (or frost cloth) and after they start to grow rapidly, add some Biobizz fertilizer to boost the growth even more.

But if you think the symptoms are caused by overfertilizing, then wait for a while to see if the plants will settle!

Does that symptom show on other plants than just on that one?
Otsikko: Vs: Pavlak's first steps
Kirjoitti: Pavlak - huhtikuu 14, 2009, 00:45:12 ap
Hmm I saw something on 5 plants: 3 Cyklons, 2 Thai. But only one had 2 leafs with it. The others looked like dried a bit. Is it possible to get rotten --> dry when overwatered?
Overfertilizing? Maybe. I fertilized +watered a bit on April 9th (Thursday) and saw the first spot 2 days later.
Tommorow I'm going out for 2-3 days so I'm going to water them just a little and sprinkle leafs with H20+Ca solution.

Would my garden be alive when I' come back at Friday?  ??? ;D
Otsikko: Vs: Pavlak's first steps
Kirjoitti: Fatalii - huhtikuu 14, 2009, 11:33:20 ap
Just remember to fertilize the small seedlings carefully and don't water them so much that they cant handle it.
Just small amounts every once in a while, you'll learn the fast way quickly after seeing when the plants grow the best!

Your garden will be just fine till friday! :)

Some new pots here so me and my girlfriend shared plants for both. She took 21: Cyklons + 6 Jalapeno Purple, 1 Thai i 1 Cayenne Golden. The rest 29 stay with me.
We repotted them on Saturday. What's interesting till today most of them made a lot and lots new leafs

(Photos from Saturday)

Today, when I came back home after 2 days at girlfriend's place I've became very upset.
I wanted to repot  my plants to bigger "houses" but I noticed them VERY VERY dry. 2 Thai Chiles are almost dead, and the soil in all pots is out of water. But habaneros and cayennes still doing very well. BUT, I watered them nicely with a lot of potion, and we'll see.
I hope the're turn well and pay me with HOT fruits :)
So I move repotting to the next day.

Today my girlfriend has phoned me and said that pale spots are on almost every plant.
After repotting we didn't fertilize, and amount of water was quite small.
The key is keep them DRY now for 2 days or some? Am I right?

I've been quite busy last days, but today I'm uploading a few photos to outdo. I think my plants grow very nice, maybe not so fast  as some of Yours, but I've got only sun without artificial light. The fastest are Jalapenos Purple and Cyklons. Photos were mostly taken late evening so colours may be a little bit different than in reality.
All platns are 5-6 weeks old:

BTW; I've got a question about flower buds. What about them, should I pich off them? or maybe only first ones?
I don't even have a clue and idea what to do. Fatalii in "how to grow" writes about pinching off first flowers, but nothing about buds.
So should I wait to flowers come in and them pick few off?

Cheers!

That happens often when you're not careful when pinching off the flowers or just damage the plants with other ways. If that happens with only those few leaves and not all new, there shouldn't be anything to worry. :)

Also, a roughly treated seedlings can result mutations which will affect the future growth like that.
That's why it's always best to use germinating methods which won't need the handling of the tiny seedlings.

That helps but you had to use scissors then you get more bushy plant.

what should I cut?
Otsikko: Vs: Pavlak's first steps 2009
Kirjoitti: Fudurez - toukokuu 21, 2009, 23:09:53 ip
Cutting makes the branches divide. If you cut the end (just below the point where the new branch is growing new leaves) of a new branch, it will start dividing from the point where the topmost leaf on that branch is. And it also starts to produce new branches from the other leafpoints on that branch that you cut. So if you cut all the new branches after lets say 4 leaves, you get a nice bushy plant in some time :)

From the bottom, sorry for a bit bad explanation. Just cut the new branches end so that after cutting you have a branch with a few leaves on it. Like I've done here on the no. 1 place. You see the no.2 that's the part you should cut away. There will still be a few leaves on the branch. You don't have to count the exact number of leaves you leave there, just as long as there are a few spots where the new branches can start growing from. (Sorry I'm a bit bad at explaining things easily :P)

My friend received some seeds from Poland. They became tiny pretty plants looking very similar to Nosegay/Holiday cheer but with elongated conical fruits. I do not have pic of ripe fruit, but it has a carrot-like color. And shape can be seen on pics here http://spice-blog.ru/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=597

Hi Jah!
I'm sure it's not polish commerial var., ornamental? Maybe, but not polish.
You wrote it's similar to Nosegay/Holiday, but pods are different, not round.
I give a shot, for me it's Purira.

I don't know what's happening with some of my Cayennes and Cyklons.
I've changed fertilizer, from strong concentrated Polish one to Chili Focus maybe 2 weeks ago.
And now few bottom leafs and several buds turned light green, almost yellow. Few buds even fell off.
Today I've found Cayennes with hunging/pendant leafs.

Tell You what. When changed fertilizer, I've also changed the way of watering. Eariler I'd watered them from the bottom, pouring water on trays under pots. Now I pour water from the top of the pot. Maybe I'm overwatering now?!

Or maybe have to use Chili Focus more often, than 2 times a week, or maybe less water?
Now I'm using 1,5-2L(+7,5ml of CHili Focus on 1L) of water on 20 plants.

BTW: I'd like to underline that only Cayennes and Cyklons have the problem, other vars. are stiff with nice green big leafs.

If we see some photos of ill leaves and whole plants, we would be able to say something. That can happen for different reasons, f.e. too low nitrogen, overwatering, low light, but also because of roots rot or burn. And even heat may cause that.

Heat and burn - no, for sure, It's still raining for 4-5 days in Warsaw
temperature indoors is still the same.
Low light? hmm, maybe. There's almost no sun now.
But I'm betting on overwatering or lack of nitrogen.

Looks wrong soil pH for me... Maybe it's the fertilizer, maybe overwatering. Start from check pH and definitely change your fertilizer since this one won't work :) Try to let the soil dry well until leaves shrivel and hang, than water with about a half of maximally possible amount. Then wait again until the soil dry out and water again. Repeat 3-4 times. That will let normalize pH if the soil became too acid because of overwatering.
I noticed that various varieties can do different ways in bad soil. Chinenses mostly keep their pretty leaves color even in too acid and poor soil. And cayennes loose foliage quickly in such soil. My mistake was to add some wooden sawdusts to ground. It was acid and poor of nitrogen.
Btw, ain't that coconut peat? My plants did not love it too. For same reasons I guess.

It's very strange for me. Since I've started to use Chili Focus plants are massivele producing new foliage, flowers are blooming, and pods are growing faster. Also little seedings made 2nd pair of true leafs in just few days.
But on the other side those turning pale leafs......maybe Jah's right and it's really all about soil pH. Besides of overwatering(this is for sure) Cayennes and Cyklons have problems with nitrogen absorption.
On Tuesday I'll measure soil pH at my university, unfortunately can't do it earlier.

BTW: Lee's using Chili Focus and deals supergreat.

This coir on the top in onlu on upper 2cms, just to fulfill pots.

I'm considering repotting plants to larger containers, and it's associated with new soil of course, but I don't have time :(.

Kirjoitti: Pavlak - heinäkuu 04, 2009, 03:58:01 ap
I'm writing my master's thesis so there's a little bit lack of time to do anything, but....
Some sort of update is needed.
We moved several of ours chiles to greenhouse. It's a bit old but it's for free and it's got exactly what we need for this and next season :)
Yesterday pots were changed from silly 1,5 to almost 10L, and the owner of few greenhouses there - Expermental Agriculture Institute surprised us with 200L of free high-class soil.
The rest of chiles and young fast growing chiles gonna be transported from my place to GH after my defending thesis. I hope till 2 weeks, so keep YOUR fingers crossed for me and my girlfriend!!

And now the photos:

GH  (there's soem sort of seedling but it's gonna be out till Monday)

chiles on the right side showing the amount of free space (it's very little according to Fatalii's one but still quite big)

How about the rest? Habaneros are blooming...a lot.
2 Hot Waxes got some aphids, and neem-oil helped a lot.
And it's very VERY hot with huge humidity here in Warsaw so plants are getting bigger and bigger even when looking at them.
I can only say that 35 C all week long coused chiles need lacecloths again. Earlier hardening off was insufficient :D

Cheers,

Nice greenhouse :) (I must figure out where I can put one for next season!)

Are you sure no one dipped that cyklon in red paint? ;)

THX m8s for your warm words.
There's only one problem, GH is up 80km from my place, just by my girlfriend's house. So till defending my thesis I won't even visit it :(.
But there's a good message too. This or MORE probably next week almost all my plants: 25 big + 15 small ones are going to GH too  ;D
We're gonna make some sort of forest there.

I'm leaving maybe 2 habaneros orange, 2 jalapenos purple, and crosses at my place to be just in touch with cool pods :)

OK, I'm going back to writting,

Cheers

this Cyklon + 1 jalapeno purple were ingridients in my today's hot garlic tomato sauce for stuffed cabbage, dinner was AWSOME!

What else, crossess are rippening (cyklon x jalapeno p. ; jalapeno p. x cyklon). Pity that summer is almost on halfway so
I have to wait for next season to sow new seeds (of Cyklopeno? Cyklops? :D :D )

Cheers!
